Balloons Fail to Float First Night of Turf Valley Festival

An issue with the weather kept most of the balloons deflated.

Update - 12:40 p.m. - This article was updated to include information about why balloons were grounded. Breezy conditions at Turf Valley Thursday night kept the 25 or so hot air balloons deflated as hundreds of people looked on at the Preakness Hot Air Balloon Festival. The balloon glow was scheduled to take place as soon as it began to get dark, around 8 p.m. But by that time many of the balloon operators were already packing up their equipment into trailers and leaving the site. At 8:30 p.m., a DJ announced over loudspeakers, "Due to breezy conditions the balloons will not conduct the ballooon glow this evening," leading to a mass exodus of attendees from Turf Valley. Earlier in the day, most of the balloons were inflated, but handlers …

Coming to Ellicott City: Harris Teeter

The supermarket will be opening in April, amidst reports that the North Carolina-based chain is up for sale.

It’s Ellicott City’s turn to elicit jealousy in the supermarket department. Harris Teeter is set to host a grand opening at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, according to Danna Jones, spokesperson for the North Carolina-based chain. The store will announce "grand opening activities," including specials, a week before the opening. The 48,000-square-foot grocery store in the new Turf Valley Towne Square shopping plaza, will have a variety of sustainable features, Jones said, including LED spot lighting throughout. LEDs are more energy and cost-efficient than traditional bulbs. The building at 2700 Turf Valley Road also has a white, reflective roof which will help keep the store cool during the summer months; ultra low-flow urinals and low-flow …

Facts, Opinion, Frustration at Hearing on BGE Reliability

Hundreds of people showed up at a hearing to share stories of power loss, frustration.

Early Tuesday morning, residents in several Ellicott City neighborhoods briefly lost power.  The timing of the outage provided a brief reprieve of laughter during a three-hour hearing later that evening with the Public Service Commission in which residents discussed the ways they said unreliable power service had affected their lives.   The hearing is part of a PSC investigation into reliability issues in some of the older Ellicott City neighborhoods.   David Rubin has lived in the Font Hill neighborhood for two decades during which, he testified, he’s had “at least 100 outages from as brief as five seconds up to eight consecutive days, following Irene.” He told Public Utility Law Judge David L. Moore that power outages are particularly …

Downed Power Lines Strand Turf Valley Residents (Updated)

A truck knocked down utility poles in the Turf Valley neighborhood.

Updated 3:45 p.m. Residents of the Turf Valley neighborhood are stranded at home today after a truck knocked down utility poles. According to police, a dump truck tore the utility poles just before 9:30 a.m. Monday, blocking the street. The truck was also caught in the wires, according to police, but no injuries have been reported.  Resident Linda Spencer said she heard what sounded like an explosion at the time of the crash. Then her power went out. “Checking outside I saw a dump truck pointed south on Turf Valley Road, heavy power lines draped across the front of the dumper,” she said in an email. “It appears that the driver had not lowered it after depositing a load of soil at the end of the street, where the extension of Resort Road is…

This is what ensues when rampant development overruns good planning and actual planning for infrastructure investement before development takes place. Bad engineering, Can you imagine this sort of planning applied to going to the Moon or building the Empire State building? Long story short, bad design, bad planning, bad engineering, bad public oversight by Howard County. I mean, let's get real on…   more ›

Turf Valley 'Circus' Continues: Ellicott City Today

Head into the day a little more informed.

There’s a 60 percent chance of rain after 1 p.m., and the National Weather Service (NWS) reported that it’s definitely going to rain this evening. The high is 48 and the low is 42 in Ellicott City today, according to the NWS. Ellicott City resident Marc Norman will be appealing plans for development near Turf Valley today.
