It's the largest Powerball jackpot in history: $600 million, according to a Maryland Lottery spokesperson. And it's the second-largest of all the multi-state lotteries; the larget being last year's Mega Millions jackpot, which hit $656 million, according to a statement from Maryland Lottery spokesperson Erica Palmisano. One of those Mega Millions winners was in Maryland. The jackpot has "rolled," 13 times - that is, there hasn't been a winning number in the past 13 drawings. Until today, the highest Powerball jackpot had been $587 million in November 2012, according to Palmisano. Powerball has been in Maryland since 2010, according to Palmisano; there have been two Maryland winners since then. The drawing is scheduled for Saturday at 10:…

The prize is the third largest in American history, according to lottery officials.
Saturday's Powerball jackpot has become what will be the third-largest jackpot prize in American history. Thanks to strong sales, the jackpot for Saturday was raised from $475 million to $550 million, with a $350.1 million cash option. It is the second largest prize in Powerball's history. No ticket has had the winning numbers for the past 13 drawings—since early April, according to a Maryland Lottery press release. Maryland has had two winning Powerball tickets since the Maryland Lottery joined the game in 2010. One was a Pennsylvania couple who purchased a ticket in Elkton on Christmas Eve in 2011 that won them $128.8 million. That September, an Abingdon couple won $108.8 million, according to the release. Maryland's last jackpot win was…

All casinos in the state pulled in less money than they did in August, including Maryland Live!, which added hundreds of new machines.
Maryland's casino revenue fell as summer turned into fall, even as the state's largest gambling facility added new slot machines in September. The Maryland Lottery reported $42.9 million in casino revenue statewide, down from $44.6 million in August. At the Maryland Live! casino near Arundel Mills, revenues dropped slightly from $32.4 million in August, to $32.0 million in September. The drop comes even after the facility boosted the number of video gaming terminals from 3,710 to 4,750 on Sept. 12. But lottery officials said the figures at Maryland Live! should not be cause for alarm. "They already have a lot of capacity," Maryland Lottery Director Stephen Martino said. "Adding more [machines] was not necessarily going to add a lot of …

The casino at Arundel Mills opens at 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
Maryland Live!—the casino opening this week at Arundel Mills—marked a milestone Monday. “I’m pleased to announce that today the Maryland Lottery did sign off on all of the final requirements for the casino and signed the operations license,” Stephen Martino, director of the Maryland Lottery, said during a community forum Monday night at Dave and Buster's in Arundel Mills. Maryland Lottery, the agency responsible for regulating the state's slots programs, had to ensure the casino complied with Maryland regulations before awarding the license. Over the weekend, the Maryland Lottery conducted a “controlled demonstration,” at the Hanover casino to test the 3,100 slot machines, surveillance and security, technical systems, food and beverage …

The odds are against you. But still ...
Do you ever fantasize about what you could do with $500 million? A winner in Friday's Mega Millions lottery drawing will get to act on those fantasies (minus taxes, of course) since no one picked the correct six numbers in Tuesday's drawing. The $500 million jackpot is considered to be the largest in Mega Millions' history, according to WJLA. Don't get too excited, though; the odds at winning the jackpot are one in 176 million -- much, much lower than the odds of being struck by lightning. (Which, if you're interested, are about one in 10,000 over your lifetime in the United States according to the National Weather Service). Tell us in our poll if you're buying a ticket and tell us in the comments what you'd do with the money if you won …

The Cordish casino is grossing $1 million a day. Not bad. If other casinos open, particularly National Harbor, that should put a big dent in their revenue. That's why Cordish and Penn National are pouring millions of dollars into ads against Question 7. The don't want big new casinos in Baltimore City and National Harbor eroding their revenue. It's pure self-interest on their part because they …   more ›
