George Zimmerman charged in death of Trayvon Martin.
Updated, 6:29 p.m. George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida, according to the Miami Herald. Zimmerman is in custody at an undisclosed location, according to the Herald, after turning himself in without incident. Zimmerman, 28, shot 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 in Sanford, FL, where Martin was visiting his father. The story has been in the national spotlight for more than a month, prompting marches and vigils in Florida and across the country, including in Howard County and other parts of Maryland. Howard County leaders called for justice for Trayvon Martin during a vigil at St. John Baptist Church on Monday night. “We have to have justice,” said Sen. Ben Cardin, D-MD. “We need an independent investigation and we’re going to get it.” Cardin drew loud applause during his speech as he took a strong stance in support of Martin, the Florida teen who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman on Feb. 26 in Sanford, FL. “We want to find out whether race was a factor,” declared Cardin. “We want to make sure justice prevails. Local organizations are holding the vigil to show solidarity with the Florida teen.
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman is scheduled to speak at a prayer vigil for Trayvon Martin on Monday, April 9 at St. John Baptist Church in Columbia. The vigil starts at 7 p.m. Martin’s death has become a national issue after the teen was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, FL. Zimmerman has said he acted in self-defense. He has not been charged under Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. The vigil organizers, the NAACP Youth Council, the African American Coalition of Howard County and the St. John the Baptist Community have invited the public to attend. St. John Baptist Church is located at 9055 Tamar Drive, Columbia.
