A CSX train stopped along the tracks Monday near the spot where a CSX train derailed last summer.
A loud screech and ensuing rumble brought some residents of Ellicott City and Oella outside to take a look at the CSX train stopped along the Patapsco River early Monday afternoon. "I heard a loud bang and then rushed outside to see if the train had fallen off the tracks only to find it stalled across the river," said Andrew Metcalf, a Patch editor who lives across the river from the Old Main Line Subdivision section of the CSX railway. The train had come to a halt due to "mechanical issues," according to Robert Sullivan, CSX spokesperson. On Facebook, one reader responded to a post about the noise with "not again;" a CSX train derailed in Ellicott City in August of last year, killing two women, Elizabeth Nass and Rose Mayr, and dumping …

Howard County officials have announced that Main Street in Ellicott City is set to reopen at 7 p.m. Friday night. The road has been closed since early Tuesday morning when a train derailed, causing the death of two young women. Those two women, Elizabeth Conway Nass and Rose Mayr, both 19, of Ellicott City, died in the incident after they were "buried under the coal as it dumped from the train cars," Howard County police said. Local blogger Tom Coale has initiated a Main Street Appreciation Weekend this weekend, saying in a Facebook announcement: Let's help our local businesses get back on their feet after a tough year. Find a way to eat, drink, or buy something sold by one of our Downtown Ellicott City Merchants this weekend. Related …
Want to show some appreciation? You have to get there first. Here's how.

The town was just designated a Best Day Trip by Washingtonian magazine and, despite the road closures necessary to clean-up the damage from a CSX train derailment earlier this week, most shops are open and ready for business. Wondering how to get to the shopping district? Howard County Tourism has some suggestions: Parking lots A, B and C are closed as the National Transportation Safety Board continues its investigation into the derailment, but there's still plenty of parking around Main Street. As a bonus -- all parking is currently free: Local blogger Tom …
Residents have been hanging out on train tracks in Ellicott City for years. Will a fatal derailment change that?
Nineteen-year-olds Elizabeth Nass and Rose Mayr were sitting on the bridge over Ellicott City with their backs to the Historic District just after midnight on Tuesday when an 80-car CSX freight train passed behind them. Twenty-one cars on the freight train derailed and tipped over. Nass and Mayr were buried in coal, according to Howard County Police, and the two friends died of “compressional asphyxia;” they suffocated. The next day, Gina Rower brought three of her kids to a memorial on Main Street where they placed roses and tied ribbons to commemorate the two young women who died. When asked about the prevalence of kids on the tracks, Rower scrunched her face. “I don’t know," she said, "Is it bad to say ‘I’d go back up there?' ... It is …

A makeshift memorial is growing into something more permanent.
A Main Street memorial dedicated to the two victims of Tuesday morning's freight train derailment will grow its roots in Ellicott City. Elizabeth Conway Nass and Rose Mayr, both 19, of Ellicott City, died in the incident after they were buried under the coal as it dumped from the train cars, Howard County Police Spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said Tuesday. Tuesday night, hundreds of people gathered in the parking lot of the girls' alma mater, Mt. Hebron High School, for an impromptu vigil. On Wednesday, a memorial sprouted up on Tiber Alley and Main Street, less than a block from the site of the derailment. A note appeared on the memorial letting people know that flowers will be planted along the Tiber River as a lasting memorial to Mayr and…

After two full days of road closures, many Main Street businesses are aching for customers.
The sun is shining, parking lot F has some open spaces, and most of the shops on Ellicott City's Main Street, a regional tourism destination, are open for business. “I’d hope that people would come on down and walk down [to lower Main Street],” Sue O’Connor said, standing behind the counter at The Wine Bin. “It’s lovely weather. Go shopping.” Two days after a CSX train derailed in Ellicott City, killing two 19-year-old women and shutting down Main Street at the Baltimore County Border, business is picking up in the Historic District. Slowly. Business at the Wine Bin was not too adversely affected, O'Connor said, because the store's location near Ellicott Mills Road, right next to parking lot F. Other businesses have felt the squeeze. …
