Killer Wasps: The Answer to the Stink Bug Problem?

Scientists are looking for the right parasitoid wasps to kill invasive stink bugs.

Stink bugs are a part of life in Howard County, but scientists are trying to change that.  In Maryland, Agriculture Research Scientist Don Weber is working in the lab to create pheromones that will lure stink bugs into a trap. By the end of this year, he said, “Things will be pretty clear where the private sector can step in and serve various stakeholders,” including farmers and homeowners. But there may be other options – besides stepping on the bugs – in the near future. Matt Buffington, a research scientist with the Department of Agriculture (USDA) is looking for a solution to the stink bug problem at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, according to the BBC. Maryland Scientists Battling America’s Top Invasive Insect: Stinkbugs

Scientist in Beltsville are working to fight the obnoxious pest that invades homes and eats crops.

There are pests lurking in the woods nearby, hiding out in dead trees, waiting for the end of winter. Occasionally, you find them on your lamps, your windowsills, or in your storage space. Farmers find them on their peaches, sweet corn and soybeans. They move slow, smell bad. They are the Department of Agriculture’s top invasive insect of interest and possibly Maryland’s most annoying bug: the Brown Marmorated Stinkbug (BMSB). Not far from Howard County,  scientists at the Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville are attempting to locate weaknesses, habits or predators that will control their rampant population growth in North America.
