Funding for After Prom Parties Safe

Despite budget uncertainties, the county will continue to fund PTSA-sponsored after-prom activities this year.

This year's after-prom activities will receive the same funding from the county as they have for the past two years, according to the county executive's office. "We will be providing each high school PTSA with $2,000 grants from the asset forfeiture fund to support their official after prom parties," Deputy Chief of Staff Ian Kennedy said. The grants are being processed, he said and should be allocated this week.  Because of "uncertainty surrounding next year's budget," as of late March, the county had not yet decided if it was going to fund the programs, according to Kennedy. Budget Woes Could Jeopardize After-Prom Parties

Howard County high schools do not know if they will be receiving money from the county for their chaperoned, after-hour parties this year.

  For the past two years, high school PTAs have received funding from Howard County to help cover the cost of after-prom parties–chaperoned events that give high school juniors and seniors a safe place to have fun after the official party is over. Money has not yet been guaranteed for this year’s events, said Howard County PTA Council chair Lin Guba. “We’ve also noticed a trend over the last few years where it’s harder and harder to fundraise,” she said. The event, however, is still needed, she said. “It's not like the event has gotten smaller. It’s not like the kids do not need something to do after prom,” she said. Thanks for the info Brandie. That answers the question about whether it is in the budget or not and I appreciate your information. I would still like to ask Mr. Ulman's office to seriously consider funding this event - particularly this year. It is more clear that the PTSA's were not "promised" this money.
