Snowquester: Wet, Heavy Snow, Gusty Winds May Begin Tonight

Here's the latest 'SnowQuester' forecast for Ellicott City.

A winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening in Howard County where, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), more than 5 inches of snow is possible, "With the potential for more than a foot" in some areas.   It's not forecast to be the light, fluffy stuff, either. "Heavy, wet snow" coupled with "gusty winds" could lead to hazardous roads and power outages, according to NWS. The Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA) was making staffing plans as of Monday afternoon, according to the MSHA Facebook page. MSHA warned, "If we do get many inches of snow it will take time (possibly several hours) before bare pavement is feasible. Please allow our crews the space they need to do their job safely…

Winds, Rain and Snow In Ellicott City this Week

Here's a look at the week ahead in weather courtesy of the National Weather Service.

The bad news: expect a dreary week ahead with blustery winds, rain, sleet and snow, and not too much sun. The good news: we’ll get that out of the way in time, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), to have a good-looking weekend.  We should see sunny skies Monday, but it will be a blustery day, with 15 to 25 mph winds from the northwest and temperatures reaching the low-40s, dropping to the high 20s at night.  Clouds will increase Tuesday, when we’ll see a high temperature in the mid-40s, dropping to the mid-30s at night. There’s a 70 percent chance of rain Tuesday night, and snow after 4 a.m.  There’s an 80 percent chance of snow Wednesday morning, turning to a rain/snow mix later in the day. NWS Warns of Sleet and Snow Mix in Howard County Friday

A hazardous weather outlook warns of a nasty wintry mix.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Howard County Friday. According to the forecast discussion, we can expect a sleet and snow mix. The precipitation, whatever it may be, will likely begin around 6 p.m. NWS is predicting not much accumulation -- "maybe a trace to a couple hundredths of an inch."  Temperatures are expected to hover in the mid-30s Friday afternoon and night.

If people can't drive in hundredths of an inch of any type of weather, then they certainly do not need to be driving. They are the hazard, not the weather. If u get caught in it on ur commute home, stop by Walmart or the library or anywhere else for the very short amount of time it takes to get that little of snow/ice. Snow, Sleet Forecasted for Howard County Friday

The National Weather Service reports that the wintry mix is slated to begin in the early afternoon.

Planning to leave the office for lunch Friday? You may want to consider brown-bagging it. The National Weather Service predicts rain and sleet are likely to start after 1 p.m. Snow and sleet accumulation are anticipated to be less than half an inch, with temperatures reaching about 37 degrees, according to NWS. The rain and snow are expected to return after midnight, and a precipitation amount of less than a tenth of an inch is possible. Temperatures are expected to drop slightly to about 33 degrees.

Rain, Sleet, Snow? Week Ahead in Weather

Here's a look at the week's forecast courtesy of the National Weather Service.

More winter weather is on the way this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). A winter weather advisory is in effect until late Tuesday morning when, according to NWS, we can expect rain and sleet. Temperatures will reach about 50 degrees, however and no accumulation is expected. Rain may continue into early Tuesday night and temperatures will drop to the mid-20s.  Wednesday should be sunny, but brisk, with temperatures reaching the high-30s and winds gusting as fast as 36 mph. Weekend Snow Possible in Howard County

Despite Friday morning’s sunny skies and mild temperatures, the National Weather Service is forecasting hazardous weather beginning Friday afternoon and persisting through the weekend  Temperatures will reach the mid-50s Friday. Clouds will begin to cover the sky as the day goes on and light rain/snow is expected late Friday afternoon, beginning around 5 p.m. Temperatures will drop to the low 30s at night and rain should turn to snow early Saturday morning. More snow is expected Saturday, mostly after noon. Otherwise, temperatures will reach the high 30s during the day, dropping to the low 20s at night. We may see more snow this week – beginning Monday – according to the National Weather Service (NWS), but temperatures should pick up as the week goes on and we’ll be close to “spring-like” weather by the end of the week.  There is a chance of snow showers Monday mostly after 4 p.m. until very early Tuesday morning. After Floods, Snow in Ellicott City?

Floods, spring-like temperatures, high winds, snow – just a typical few days worth of Maryland weather, it seems.  After heavy rains Thursday that led to flooding across Howard County, the National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting light snow Thursday night and Friday. There’s a 60 percent chance of snow Friday, mostly before 9 a.m. Skies should become mostly sunny after that and temperatures will hit the low-30s. NWS is calling for a ‘blustery’ day, with winds as fast as 40 mph. Friday night, temperatures will drop to the low 20s. Clouds will return Saturday, with temperatures in the mid-30s and calmer winds. Howard County Schools to Close Early Friday

Schools will close 1.5 hours early due to possible snow storm Friday afternoon.

All Howard County public schools will close 1.5 hours early Friday due to an expected afternoon snow storm. All aftercare programs, sponsored by the Columbia Association and the Department of Recreation & Parks in Howard County public schools have also been canceled, according to the school system. All school-sponsored and community-sponsored events, including high school athletic practices and games scheduled for this evening, are canceled. Baltimore, Carroll and Montgomery schools are among those that have announced earlier on Friday that they will close schools early Friday. A Hazardous Weather Outlook and Winter Weather Advisory have been issued by the National Weather Service Friday, and both include Howard and Carroll counties. The …
