Tere's Latin Market Adding Full Restaurant Next Door

The grocer's small restaurant has been so popular, owners decided to expand.

When the Quizno's sub shop next to Tere's Latin Market on Route 40 closed about two months ago, the owners of the market saw an opportunity. The market already had a popular Mexican restaurant in the back—owner Teresa Carino said that at lunchtime the line would extend to the front door of the shop—but there wasn't enough space to grow. So Tere's acquired the old sub shop and next month it plans to open a full restaurant next door to their market. "We are 100 percent excited," said Carino. About three years ago, Carino and her husband Jose started serving tacos, tortas and pupusas in the back of their market, which is located at 8525 Baltimore National Pike. Over time, through word of mouth, the customer base grew until there wasn't enough…

Work on Route 40 Improvements to Begin This Week

Construction is expected to take about three weeks.

Work is set to begin this week on two streetscape improvement projects on Route 40 in Ellicott City, Howard County officials announced in a release. “Route 40 is a vital corridor for Howard County because of the economic activity it generates and the diverse communities it supports,” said County Executive Ken Ulman in a release.  “These projects will benefit residents and visitors to the county while strengthening the vibrancy of the commercial centers and aiding water quality.” Officials said work is expected to begin May 1 at two locations: U.S. 40 at Wheaton Way and U.S. 40 at Chatham Road and construction, expected to take about three weeks, will be done at night so as not to disrupt traffic. Work will include new curbs for medians, …

It really upsets me that sidewalks are being placed in areas where there is very little pedestrian traffic and the people in Stonecrest can't get sidewalks where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic. There are a lot of people out walking and risking their lives because the drivers speed thru here, giving no thought at all to human life. The police have been seen back here once and that was for …   more ›

Route 40 Traffic Patterns to Change Wednesday

The Maryland State Highway Administration is planning to route traffic back onto the Patapsco Bridge after two years of renovation work.

Welcome to the newly renovated Patapsco River Bridge, if you’re driving eastbound, that is. The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) plans to shift eastbound traffic on US Route 40 onto the rehabilitated bridge after almost two years of construction, which saw the construction of a temporary bridge.  Weather permitting, eastbound traffic will be shifted from the temporary bridge to the reconstructed, original bridge on Wednesday, Dec. 19 between 9 a.m. and 3p.m., according to a statement.   Drivers should expect temporary lane closures and lane shifts, but once the switchover is complete, the westbound side of Route 40 will be open to two lanes. On Thursday, Dec. 27, westbound traffic will be shifted onto its side of the …

Goodbye Forest Motel

The Forest Motel closed in 2009. Soon all traces will be gone.

The Forest Motel opened in 1958, and by the looks of it, was a swanky spot in its day. But that day has come to an end. Closed in 2009, the motel has been demolished to make room for Forest Green, a new retail space. Have you ever stayed at the Forest Motel? Share your (family-friendly) stories here!
