Howard County Public Schools Closed Thursday

The schools will be closed for a professional development day.

  At least the local kids will be able to enjoy the beautiful spring weather expected on Thursday. All Howard County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday for a pre-scheduled professional development day.

Would Schools Be Safer With Armed Officers?

After the Newtown, CT school shooting, Maryland legislators are looking at a number of ways to make schools safer.

According to Annapolis Patch, delegates from Anne Arundel County are introducing legislation on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in hopes of increasing security and mental health services at public schools across the state. The proposed bill would also pay for an armed resource officer at each school. "If you really understand public schools in Maryland, you know this: They are becoming increasingly more difficult for classroom teachers because discipline is lacking at home and teachers are spending an increasing amount of time maintaining discipline in the classroom," said Del. $30 Million Grant Application Fails to Receive Union Signature

School Board approves grant, but Howard County Education Association says it doesn’t have enough time to vote on it.

  A potential $30 million federal grant to Howard County Public Schools may be dead before the application is even submitted to Washington. The issue has pitted new Superintendent Renee Foose squarely against Paul Lemle, the president of the Howard County Education Association. Foose said Lemle has a "political motive" to promote candidates the organization supports before the upcoming election, while Lemle claims the school’s central office didn’t involve the teacher’s union in the grant writing process and that this Race to the Top grant will continue to tie teachers’ evaluations with standardized test scores.
