Local Business Gives Back To Dog Rescue

Boone & Sons Jewelers makes dog rescue a priority

Businesses of all shapes and sizes donate to charity, and they often give to the large, name brand organizations with big marketing budgets. Everyone can rally around the fight to cure cancer, help kids in need, or support victims of natural disasters, and all of these things are very worthy and important causes. What’s not as common, however, is to see prominent businesses get behind local dog rescue. Rescue groups like Mutts Matter get most of their corporate sponsorships from companies in the pet industry that understand the importance of rescue and know the hard, sad facts – that five to seven million animals enter the shelter system each year, and over four million don’t make it out.    As an all-volunteer, nonprofit rescue, Mutts …

Rockburn Skills Park Opens

  County officials and mountain bikers celebrated the newest addition to Rockburn Branch Park on Saturday. Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE), an organization promoting sustainable mountain biking programs, worked in partnership with Howard County's Recreation and Parks Department to bring its plans for the Rockburn Skills Park to fruition. The park includes what is known as a "pump track," or a "highly engineered plot of dirt with banked turns and bumps, so that riders can propel themselves using only their bodies, pumping with their legs instead of pedaling," according to the park's creators. You can also access it from the other side, off of Montgomery Rd. Park down at the end of the road by the West Pavilion and ride the paved trail that crosses through the woods to the other side of Rockburn (short trail that the county guys sometimes drive on, but note that it is not open to the public to drive on).
