Better with Age: Cat of the Week

Oscar has been patiently waiting for a home since tragedy struck his family.

Hello there! My name is Oscar and boy do I have a story for you.  I came from a loving home – it was supposed to be my fur-ever home.  Tragically, my owner was mugged and later died, so I came to Small Miracles with 3 other kitties. They all got adopted, but I've been here for over a year, waiting for someone to notice me. You see, I'm a senior cat, about 11-years-old, but I still have lots of love to give! I’m not as young or as colorful as some of the other cats here, but that doesn’t mean that I’m any less deserving of a home. I know there's someone out there who will appreciate me.   I love to sit on your lap and will be an attentive companion. Because I am a bit nervous at the shelter, I am over-grooming, which means my fur is not as …

Two-fer: Dogs of the Week are Best Buds

Max and Pancho are a team; they're looking for a home together.

St. Patrick’s Day may be over, but we sure are hoping some luck of the Irish will hang around!  Finding a fur-ever home can be hard. But, it’s even harder when you want to find a home with your best friend.  I’m Max (the beagle mix) and this is my buddy Pancho.   When we first came to Small Miracles, we were placed in separate pens. I missed Pancho so much that I began to lose weight. As soon as the humans realized this, they put us together so we could be happy again.   You see, there is no way I could ever be without my best buddy. Won’t you please consider adopting both of us? Come on, it would be twice the love and double the fun! Small Miracles is a nonprofit, no-kill cat and dog shelter in Ellicott City. Each week we will feature a …

3-Legged Cat Runs, Jumps, Plays: Cat of the Week

I'm Poppy. And I'm still peppy after losing a leg. Let's play!

Sometimes certain things are just meant to be and me coming to Small Miracles Cat Rescue was one of them.   My name is Poppy and I’m not your average kitten. I arrived at Small Miracles around the tender young age of five-months-old with severe nerve damage. After observing me, it was decided that amputating my front leg would be best. Major surgery, I know! But I have no regrets. I am free! I am free to run, jump, and play as I please without any pain. Don’t worry, losing a leg hasn’t affected my personality either. I still love to cuddle and purr.   I hope you reading this article was meant to be and that I’ll be home in your arms soon. Please come visit me at Small Miracles today! Small Miracles Cat Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill cat (…

Almond: Cat of the Week

This cat comes with her very own luxurious coat.

After the inauguration earlier this week, coats are the talk of the town!   From the beautiful Obama ladies to Jill Biden, a stylish winter coat is the new must have item. It’s nice to see that Washington finally caught on to this craze. I’ve been rockin’ the snazzy coat thing for years. I have this beautiful, one-of -a-kind, almond fur coat.  Wait, don’t call PETA! It’s OK, I’m a cat, I’m allowed to have a fur coat. I’m Almond, named for the beautiful color of my coat. Like many of the cats here, I have a rags to (almost) riches story. That story will be complete when I go home with you.   I was found pregnant along with my two sisters. They were a great help in raising my litter. I’m proud to say all of my beautiful babies found homes, …

Make This the Year of Triscuit: Dog of the Week

This guy is looking for fun, exercise and a family in 2013.

Hey, guys! I’m Triscuit! The new year is here and I think 2013 will be the best year ever.  I think this is the year I will get my fur-ever home. You will never meet another dog like me! I’m a shepherd and akita mix that makes me stunningly good looking and ridiculously playful! I love to fetch, but only with a rope -- I’m not a huge fan of balls. I’m a young guy and would love a family that is active like me. I’m a loyal, friendly, outgoing kind of guy. My personality is unforgettable; once you meet me you will see that my energy is contagious! Being a free spirit, I'm not particularly fond of crating, so I would do great with a family that will be social with me and has plenty of time to smother me in affection and play with me. I get …

Don't Forget the Mistletoe: Cat of the Week

Bring this cat home in time for the holidays.

Christmas is right around the corner and I’m sure many of you still have some shopping to do. Me? Of course not, I’m a cat – I don’t shop. I sit around and wait for you to bring me gifts.  Enough about me, lets talk about you. How many of you men out there are looking for that perfect gift for the lady in your life? I’m not talking a box of chocolates, I’m talking the kind of gift that will make her fall in love with you.   Have you considered mistletoe? Okay, so maybe mistletoe is a little desperate.  But what about a cat named Mistletoe?   I’m pretty sure an adorable young girl named Mistletoe like me will win her heart. I’m cute, friendly, and playful so I would be the purrfect gift.   Plus, nothing says commitment like getting a pet …

C'Mon Get Happy: Dog of the Week

Happy is looking for a home for the holidays.

'Tis the season to be jolly! With holiday cheer in the air, who isn’t happy? I know I am!   Literally, my name is Happy!   Just take a look at my picture. Can’t you see happiness written all over my face?  I am one perfect sized ball of fluff, poodle-terrier fluff that is.  I love this time of year. Whether it’s running through freshly raked piles of leaves or curling up by the fire, this time of year is special. Thanksgiving and Christmas make it even more special. Can you imagine the table scraps and all the bowls I get to lick? It’s like paradise for dogs. What would make this time of year even more special would be a fur-ever home! Please stop by Small Miracles today and visit me. I promise I will help you clean up all the plates from …

All-American Macy: Dog of the Week

Macy is sweet, kind and shy. And would be thankful for a home.

I'm Macy and I am an all-American, girl-next-door type of dog. I am sweet, kind, pretty, and a little shy.  It’s the season to be thankful and I’m so thankful that Small Miracles has worked so hard to give me a second chance.  I didn’t have a fair start to life and I am looking for that special family who will give me the chance I deserve. I’ve learned a lot while here.  I have learned to come when called and am now learning to sit. I’m learning to trust people more but I still prefer to be an only dog. Maybe one day that will change, but for now I just want to work on being the best family member I can be for my humans. My perfect fur-ever family will shower me with love, affection, praise and cookies.  In return, I promise to be the …

Scruffy Yet Precious: Dog of the Week

This pup's family was killed in a fire. Now Precious is ready to move on.

Hello! My name is Precious.   I know, I look like my name should be Scruffy but once you get to know me you will see why I am named Precious. I’m young and full of love. I give great doggy hugs and would love nothing more than a new family to call my own.   I’m a Labrador mix which means I’m a great family dog and will get along with everyone.  I look forward to lounging on the couch with Dad, helping Mom in the kitchen, and playing outside with my new brothers and sisters. I did have a great family so I never thought I would end up in a shelter.  Tragically, they lost their lives in a house fire. I was luckily to be outside at the time so I survived.  My fur may look a little scruffy, but if you look closely you will see that some of that…

Have Some Faith: Cat of the Week

Faith is one of nearly 40 cats "on sale" at Small Miracles.

Hello, my name is Faith!  Remember the 47 “on sale” cats from last week?  Well, I’m one of them! My name reminds me every day that I need to have faith that I will find my forever home one day. Until then, I put a smile on my face and act as cute as I can hoping to convince someone to give me a second chance. I haven’t had many visitors, but when someone takes the time to pick me up, its show time! I squint my eyes lovingly at them as I snuggle into their arms. I rub my head under their chin trying to show how affectionate I can be. If that isn’t enough to get their attention, I stretch out my paws and kneed their arm gently.   And of course I purr!   If there are any cute cat tips that I’m forgetting, please do let me know!  I desperately…
