‘Substantial’ Winter Storm Possible Next Week

AccuWeather is warning of a storm possibly bringing snow, power outages and coastal flooding next week.

A "substantial" winter storm could blow its way through Maryland by the middle of next week, according to the weather website AccuWeather. The website’s current forecast predicts a potential for rain that could turn into snow, with coastal flooding and power outages. “While the details are still uncertain, a larger, slower-moving and more powerful storm could slam the mid-Atlantic and New England with heavy precipitation, strong winds and above-normal tides Tuesday (Dec. 18) into Thursday (Dec. 20),” according to an email from AccuWeather. The current forecast from the National Weather Service calls for a chance of rain through the early part of next week, but doesn’t currently predict any snow for the area.

O’Malley: 280,000 Without Power, Intense 12 Hours Coming

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey a couple of hours ago and Marylanders can expect heavy rain and strong winds for the next 12 hours.

The eye of Hurricane Sandy is making its way through the upper Chesapeake Bay and 280,000 Maryland residents are without power, Gov. Martin O’Malley said Monday night. The storm made landfall near Cape May, New Jersey, earlier Monday night, according to meteorologist Ken Wedelski of the National Weather Service. It is moving on a north/northwest course but is slowing down, moving at about 23 mph. About half of the citizens in Cecil and Harford counties are without power. Rain and strong winds will continue in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Blizzard warnings are in effect for Western Maryland and tidal flooding is expected, Wedelski said at MEMA headquarters in Reisterstown during the governor’s 9:30 p.m. press conference. “The next 12 …

Derecho Report: BGE Surprised by ‘Freak Storm’

'It is important to note that no utility east of the Mississippi River could have anticipated the raw strength of this storm system.' BGE report.

The unpredictability of the June derecho was an important factor in the scope and length of power outages across BGE’s service area, according to a new report filed with the state. BGE filed its Major Outage Event Report with the Public Service Commission on July 30 as is required by Maryland law after a "major outage event." The derecho, which hit on June 29, left more than three quarters of a million Maryland customers in the dark – 62 percent of BGE’s customer base in Maryland.  Focus on BGE's response intensified after a letter sent by Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and six other elected municipal heads. In it, they said BGE refused to give them specific outage information directly after the storm hit, and that the utility generally…

EC - you realize that BGE has been lying to their customers for decades, right? If Taiwan can go through a typhoon (hurricanes in this side of the world) without losing power why can't Howard County and all of MD not to the same? I am not wasting my hard earned money to buy a generator. If it costs that much money to bury the lines maybe BGE should have started when they promised and instead of …   more ›

BGE Nears End of Derecho Outages; Warns of More to Come

'Customers are urged to make preparations in advance of likely new weather-related power outages.' - BGE officials.

The saga of the derecho storm-related power outages is about to come to an end, but the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company is warning customers to expect more outages, as there are storms in the forecast through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday night and a 50 percent chance of storms Sunday. "Customers are urged to make preparations in advance of likely new weather-related power outages," BGE said in a statement released Saturday. BGE also announced Saturday that approximately 650 residents were still without power as a result of the storm last Friday. As of 7 p.m., nearly 7,000 BGE customers in Maryland were without power, but most of the outages were a result…

(Updated) Brush Fire Warning Continues Tuesday for Much of Maryland

A combination of factors means there is ‘explosive fire growth potential’ in Maryland on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

This story was updated at 9:07 a.m. Tuesday. A brush fire warning in effect for much of Maryland Monday due to a combination of dry conditions, gusty winds and warm temperatures continued on Tuesday. The National Weather Service warning is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Monday's warm, dry conditions caused a brush fire in Westminster, reported WBAL TV. The cause of the fire, which melted the siding of a home, is still under investigation, the station reported. Winds on Tuesday are expected to blow west 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph; humidity is at 20 to 30 percent, according to the warning. Temperatures are expected to reach highs near 65 degrees Tuesday in the Baltimore/D.C. region. The combination “will create explosive …

Wintry Mix Is on the Way

Highway and utility crews prepare for storm.

A winter weather advisory for snow, sleet and freezing rain is in effect from 11 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS forecast one to two inches of snow and sleet Friday evening before the precipitation changes to freezing rain Saturday morning. Temperatures should be in the mid-to-upper 20s Friday night, which is below freezing, and the NWS said ice is expected to accumulate on trees and power lines. In the event of downed power lines, BGE advised people to call 1-877-778-2222. The utility company said to report power outages to 410-685-0123. NotifyMeHoward Helps County Earn StormReady Designation

National Weather Service bestows designation upon jurisdictions prepared to meet weather challenges head-on

Howard County has been named a StormReady community by the National Weather Service. The county received the designation in part because of its new NotifyMeHoward system, accordion to a press release from Howard County Government. NotifyMeHoward, which launched in mid-November, is a "free enhanced notification system capable of delivering a wide variety of valuable information, like weather alerts, directly to the inbox or mobile device of subscribers," according to the statement. In addition to some sort of notification system, StormReady-designated communities must have a 24-hour "warning point" to receive NWS information and provide local reports and advice on weather conditions, according to the statement. Read the complete press …
