Ulman to Deliver State of the County Address Thursday

Last year Ulman focused on seizing the moment.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman is scheduled to deliver his State of the County address to the local business community at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City on Thursday. This will be Ulman's 7th time delivering the address that looks ahead at the priorities in the county. This year's address will focus on Howard County's emergence from the economic downturn in a position for growth and how the county has become a "model for Maryland," according to David Nitkin, director of communications for Howard County. In his 2012 address, Ulman discussed making Howard County a model for  21st century economic innovation. He spoke about founding the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship and working on the Inter-County Broadband Network, according …

If Ulman thinks that the intercounty broadband network is a model for innovation, he must be smoking something. I seriously doubt even one citizen has noticed a single diffence from that federal program that cost more than $100 million tax dollars. But, nice try?   more ›

Ulman Offers Breakfast for Best Ravens Pun

County Executive will pick from the caw-cophony of puns submitted and deliver breakfast to the winner.

Howard County Executive and Ravens superfan Ken Ulman is getting into the Super Bowl spirit by soliciting Ravens-themed breakfast items from local residents. Whoever submits the best idea, will get a breakfast delivered by the County Exec to their office, school, or organization. Ulman put the call out on Tuesday on his Facebook page by offering menu items such as T-sizzle sausage and eggs, Brendan Ayanba-bages, Michael Eggs Oher Easy and Box o'morning Joe Flacco. Soon after, the ideas flowed in. Here are the top ones now: Personally, I'd like some Ozzie "Wizard of Oz Wheaties." If you'd like to be considered for the contest, post your idea on Ulman's Facebook page under the post, "Ulman's Ultimate Ravens Breakfast." What would you bring…

County Executive Ken Ulman and his brother, Livestrong CEO Doug Ulman, weigh in on the cyclist's interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman watched his brother Doug Ulman, president and CEO of the Livestrong Foundation, talk about the future a day after founder Lance Armstrong admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs, according to the county spokesman. “He watched his brother on the Today Show today,” county spokesperson Mark Miller said. “He knows that both his brother and supporters are disappointed, but that the important work of the foundation must continue.” Armstrong on Thursday told Oprah Winfrey that he had used performance-enhancing drugs for all of his seven Tour de France wins and said he would “spend the rest of my life trying to earn back trust and apologize.” Doug Ulman said on the Today Show Friday morning that watching …

Watson Outpaces Other Council Members, Raises $254,000 in 2012

Courtney Watson raised more funds than the other members of the County Council combined.

2012 was a great fundraising year for Howard County Council member Courtney Watson. Watson, a Democrat who represents Ellicott City, Elkridge and Hanover in the First Council District, raised $254,410 in 2012, more than the total fundraising numbers of the four other Council members combined. She has a total of $374,457 cash on hand. "I am working hard to make Howard County an even better place to live and work," said Watson in a statement announcing her fundraising figures. "We should all be proud of the progress we are making." Watson has not formally announced whether or not she plans to run for County Executive in 2014, when Ken Ulman must step down from the post due to term limits. In a recent Baltimore Sun report, she said she has …

Ulman Talks Speed Cameras, Guns on Midday

Three Maryland county executives joined Dan Rodricks to discuss national, state and local issues.

After some technical difficulty, at 14:35, Ken Ulman joins Harford County Executive David Craig and Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz on WYPR's Midday with Dan Rodricks to talk about statewide issues.  Ulman said officials need to present a gas tax plan that citizens can buy into – one that lays out a vision for where money will be spent despite the “back room dealing,” going on in Annapolis. On speed cameras, Ulman said if legislators want to “strengthen the rules, we’re more than willing to participate,” but he wants to make sure that the speed camera program in Howard County remains trustworthy. The program aired on Tuesday Jan. 8, the day the school safety task force has its first meeting, in response to the Newtown, Mass. …

Ulman: No More Cuts

The Howard County executive says his top priority in the 2013 General Assembly Session is to avoid additional cuts in state aid.

UPDATED (4:00 p.m.)—If Howard County Executive Ken Ulman had one wish for the coming General Assembly session it would be to avoid the type of cuts to local aid that have affected his county and others for the last five years. "Just don't cut me any more," Ulman said Tuesday during an appearance on the Midday with Dan Rodricks show on WYPR radio. [Listen to the show.] Ulman lamented cuts to local aid which in recent years have seen transportation funding cut by as much as 90 percent and a shifting of some teacher pension costs to the local jurisdictions. "It's been a rough time to be a county executive," Ulman said of the cuts and trying economic times. The Howard County executive's pleas echo those of leaders from other counties. Many …

Ulman Says He Would Support Assault Weapons Ban

Howard County Executive said he'd also support restrictions on magazine size.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said Monday he'd support a ban on assault weapons and regulations on gun magazine size as public officials across the country weigh in on gun policy after the deadly school shooting in Connecticut. "We need to have some common sense gun regulation," said Ulman at a press conference inside the George Howard Building in Ellicott City. "I've talked to a lot of friends and a lot of people I know who are very strong supporters of the Second Amendment who have said now is the time," said Ulman. "You've got to take a test to get a driver's license. Hopefully we can agree there ought to be basic steps that ensure people are responsible." Ulman said that banning assault weapons and reducing magazine size is not a…

Ulman Picks Up Trash in Redskins Garb

Ken Ulman dropped by Landover Wednesday to satisfy a bet with his Prince George's County equal.

County Executive Ken Ulman dropped by Landover on Wednesday to pick up roadside trash in a Redskins jersey, fulfilling the terms of a wager with Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker. The two top officials had placed a friendly bet on Sunday's matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins. Ulman, a diehard Ravens fan, lost out when Baltimore fell to the 'Skins 31-28 in overtime. Baker, ever the gracious victor, invited Ulman earlier this week to meet him at the Prince George's County Sports & Learning Complex in the shadow of FedEx Field. Though Ulman arrived sporting purple, he soon found himself clad in the burgundy-and-gold jersey of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. After some friendly trash talk, the …

Open Thread: Which Democrat Should Run for Governor?

The next gubernatorial election in 2014 could draw a crowded primary field.

Comptroller Peter Franchot, who was expected to run for governor in 2014, announced Tuesday he would not seek the post. Franchot, whose criticism of Gov. Martin O’Malley lead many to believe he would run, instead announced he would seek to retain his current position.   But just because Franchot won’t run, doesn’t mean there won’t be a crowded primary field.  Other Democrats who may seek the office include: Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Del. Heather Mizeur, Attorney General Doug Gansler and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.  See related coverage: What Democrat would you like to see make a run for the state’s top office?
