De Lacy Says She'll Ask 'Tough Questions' as School Board Member

The former teacher also says redistricting process is 'broken.'

Ann De Lacy has a lot of questions about the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), and she plans to bring them all to the table as a newly elected member of the Board of Education.  “I will continue to work very hard to make sure that things are open, public and that we have a truly world class school system for every single student in Howard County,” she said Wednesday morning. “I’m going to ask tough questions and expect honest answers.” In a race that at times saw candidates separated by less than one percent, De Lacy came in second place, with 16.6 percent of the vote. Incumbents Janet Siddiqui and Ellen Flynn Giles came in first and third place, respectively.  Coming in fourth was Bob Ballinger, with 15.35 percent; David Gertler…

It doesn't sound like anything was said against DeLacy, just the idea of shuffling kids based on income. I actually like the idea of basic education principles being brought back to the classroom. As far as redistricting though, let's solve the problems, not just re-shuffle them. You want to see improvement? Don't just mix the low test scores in with the high test scores - all that will do is …   more ›

What Time Will 2012 Election Results Be Announced in Maryland?

Polls here close at 8 p.m., but swing states end voting as early as 7 p.m. local time.

Maryland voters have until 8 p.m. to cast their Election 2012 ballots, but voting in other key swing states ends an hour earlier, and exit polling could provide an early indication of whether President Obama or Mitt Romney wins the White House. The earliest key state to watch for is Virginia, where polls close at 7 p.m.  Voting ends 30 minutes later in swing states Ohio and North Carolina. At 7 p.m. swing states Florida, Pennslvania and New Hampshire close their polls. The final two swing states, Nevada and Iowa, close at 10 p.m. EST. In Howard County, MD, election officials have said they hope to have results by midnight. For more local news, sign up for the Ellicott City Patch newsletter . Howard County Election 2012: Board of Education

Results from the Howard County Board of Education Race with all 111 precincts reporting.

More than 16 percent of registered Howard County voters cast a ballot before the General Election during early voting, according to the State Board of Elections, but with three open spots on the Board of Education, this contest starts out Tuesday morning wide open.  The primaries saw low voter turnout – even lower than the traditionally meager primary turnout. In Howard County just about 19 percent of registered voters went to the polls to vote in the primaries, that’s versus 43.9 percent in the 2008 primary election.  Close results in the BOE primary (two of the candidates were within tenth of a percentage point during the primaries) mean it’s anyone’s guess which three candidates come out victorious … and the vote count may take a while …

Early Voting: 'I Just Feel Like I Need to Vote'

Despite a hurricane, Howard County residents took to the polls in large numbers this year.

Cathy Godfrey wanted to vote early. "I'd planned to vote Monday," she said, adding with a laugh, "And Tuesday and Wednesday."   But it was Friday by the time she made it to the polls,  a day after early voting was supposed to have ended. Early voting was cancelled on Monday and Tuesday --  due Hurricane Sandy -- and not originally schedule for Friday.  Godfrey was not the only person who took time out Friday cast a ballot ahead of next week's General Election. In fact, by Friday afternoon, turnout for early voting had already exceeded that of 2010 in 22 of 24 jurisdictions in the state. "It's the convenience factor," Godfrey said as she was leaving the Ellicott City Senior Center. Looking back at the line out the door she added, "Though it…

To whom it may concern: It makes no sense to only have three locations open in a place like Howard County, when you normally have 110 voting locations on election day. Fewer people actually get election day off, so they have to vote when their jobs permit. Often people work outside the county, and may not get the opportunity to vote. That said, early elections resolve that concern, however three …   more ›
