The Howard County Fair runs through this Saturday, August 11. Did you snap a picture of the kiddos on a pony ride? Take video footage of the zipper ride in action? If so, be sure to add your photos and videos to the gallery by clicking "upload photos and videos." The fair, at the Howard County Fairgrounds, is open from noon - 11 p.m. daily through Saturday. Admission is $5, $2 for seniors 62 and older and free for kids younger than 10.

The CDC and the Howard County Health Officer have tips for people to stay safe as swine flu incidents increase across the country.
The Howard County Fair is in full swing, and to enjoy it safely the County health officer is warning residents to be extra cautious, particularly around pigs. That’s because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported an increase in the number of swine flu cases in the United States, though not in Maryland. In the past week, the A H3N2v – or swine flu virus – has been reported in Hawaii, Ohio and Indiana. In all of the recent cases, according to the CDC, patients came in contact with pigs before getting sick, and most of them were near those pigs at an agricultural fair. “We want to be sure that local agricultural fair workers and visitors are aware of the situation and informed about precautionary measures they can …

The Iron Chef competition at the Howard County Fair offered a taste of the county's agricultural bounty.
Amid the fried dough stands and pit beef booths at the Howard County Fair was a throwback to the area's agricultural roots. On Aug. 11, the fair's Iron Chef event, now in its fifth year, armed contestants with locally produced ingredients and allotted them one hour to turn them into something delicious. Each team received As fresh vegetables sizzled on grills, and meat from grass-fed cattle caramelized inside foil wraps, Laura Neuman, head of the county's Economic Development Authority, stopped by to remind onlookers of this sector of local business.
