7 Things to Do Over Memorial Day Weekend in Howard County

Don't have plans for Memorial Day? Try one of these activities to help keep you and your family entertained.

  Go Fishing! The weather Memorial Day weekend is expected to float around the mid-70s, meaning great fishing weather. The Patapsco River in Ellicott City is home mostly to sunfish, smallmouth bass, and rainbow trout, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). DNR also recommends Centennial Lake on the Columbia/ Ellicott City line, which includes species such as largemouth bass, channel catfish, trout and the rare tiger muskie. DNR reports tiger muskies have been in stocked in the lake since 1995 and there are some now over 36 inches that “provide an explosive fight for anglers who hook into one.” Remember, don’t forget to obtain a fishing license, if you’re older than 16. Marketti Pleads Guilty for Role in Countywide Door Kick Burglaries

She pleaded guilty shortly before her trial was set to begin this week at Howard County Circuit Court.

One of the two suspects charged with a string of daytime door kick-in burglaries across Howard County pleaded guilty this week in Howard County Circuit Court. Dianna Lynn Marketti, 31, who is listed at addresses in Glen Burnie and Dundalk, in court records pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree burglary on May 21. Marketti was described by police as the getaway driver in a series of burglaries that involved kicking in doors and stealing valuables from homes throughout Howard County in August and September of 2012. Joseph Leo Baumgarten, 40, of Pasadena, was also charged in the burglaries. Baumgarten is currently awaiting trial, according to online court records. Police Planning Seatbelt Stops, DUI Enforcement Memorial Day Weekend

The planned enforcement will take place both day and night leading up to Memorial Day.

  Howard County police will be out in force this weekend pulling over drivers who aren't wearing seatbelts, as well as looking for impaired drivers. The effort is part of a nationwide "Click It or Ticket" campaign that will run day and night through Memorial Day. Highly visible seatbelt enforcement already began Tuesday on Main Street in Ellicott City, where police pulled over and ticketed drivers not wearing seat belts during the day. A police spokesperson said although the intiative is countywide, they may concentrate their efforts in areas such as Main Street, Route 29 and Route 100. In addition to seatbelt enforcement, police will also have a "saturation patrol" that will seek out impaired drivers. Police reminded residents that they …

Riding Lawn Mower Stolen in Ellicott City: Crime Roundup

Ellicott City  Residential burglary Someone stole a riding lawn mower from a shed on the 3700 block of Ligon Road late the night of May 9 or early May 10 according to police. The burglar broke locks to get the mower out. A burglar pried open a detached garage on the 10400 block of Baltimore National Pike sometime between May 8 and May 10, according to police. The burglar tried to push a motorcycle to the door, but was unsuccessful. Nothing else was reported stolen. Columbia Residential Burglary  Police charged a 24-year-old Laurel woman with burglary and trespassing after a resident of the 10600 block of Green Mountain Circle called to report a burglary in process. First Cricket Field Opens in Howard County

The president of the International Cricket League even flew in for a visit.

Expect to see bowlers, batsmen and wicket keepers at Schooley Mill Park in Highland; Howard County's cricket community finally has a dedicated field. On Monday, the county officially opened its first dedicated cricket field, which will be home to a growing adult league and a fledgling youth league. The field features fresh sod on a 300-foot diameter circular playing area that overlays two multipurpose fields. The field cost the county approximately $450,000 to build, according to an Explore Howard report. The president of the International Cricket Council flew in from Dubai and the president of the U.S. Cricket Assocation flew from Florida to visit the new field last week. Teen Daughter, Boyfriend Held Without Bail in Blogger's Slaying

Charging documents released Monday said the pair plotted to kill Howard County blogger Dennis Lane’s partner as well.

A 14-year-old girl and her 19-year-old boyfriend plotted the death of the girl's father, Howard County blogger Dennis Lane, as well as his significant other, charging documents in the case of Lane's slaying revealed Monday. Both Morgan Arnold, 14, and Jason Bulmer, 19, were held without bail after brief hearings over a closed circuit television system at Howard County District Court on Monday. According to police, on May 10 Bulmer stabbed Lane multiple times at the family home in a plan to kill Lane and his partner, Denise Geiger, and then flee to California. Geiger was unharmed. The charging documents are based on a police interview with Bulmer, who spoke with detectives on Friday after Lane was found dead. Lane was a prominent voice in …
