Howard County Salamanders Rare Find for Herp Search

A group that catalogs reptiles and amphibians in Maryland has had some exciting finds recently.

The Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas enlists a team of volunteers to document amphibian and reptile populations across the state. These "herp searchers," short for herpetology, the study of amphibians and reptiles, have been busy lately.  Bonnie Ott snapped a picture of only the second (and third) Four-toed Salamanders spotted in Howard County in 3 years of searching, according to Sue Muller, coordinator for the Howard County herpetology atlas. In the Patapsco Valley State Park, on the border of Howard and Baltimore County, Jay Killian spotted the first Eastern Fence Lizard to be seen in Howard County, Muller said.  Unfortunately for Howard County, the lizard was technically on the Baltimore County side of the river.  "Surely there …

Ellicott City Frog a First for Maryland

But the squirrel tree frog is not the first new species found by Herp-searching Marylanders.

Burmese pythons, alligator turtles, spring salamanders; none of the animals are native to this area, yet all have been found in Howard County.  “We have now found 13 species statewide that are non-native,” said Sue Muller, Howard County Coordinator for the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas, a project to document amphibian and reptile populations across the state. Most recently, a resident sent Muller a picture of a squirrel tree frog that he found near his patio. “They’re a Coastal Plains species found from Texas all the way up through North Carolina and just into the tip of southeast Virginia,” Muller said.  “So Columbia, Maryland is out of their range.” Or was.
