Basic costume rules this year: Nothing realistically gross, nothing that makes little kids cry, and nothing offensive to the dignity of others. It was easier when they just dressed as dinosaurs.
Halloween meets many of my tests for an excellent holiday. It is fun for children, and it has multiple layers of cultural significance. Best of all, it involves sharing mirth without exchanging gifts. Any holiday that provides an excuse for dressing up in costume and gorging on candy is a holiday I can appreciate right along with the kids. Our costumes are not elaborate. I might choose a piece of novelty headgear – Viking helmet, hard hat, devil horns – to pair with my work outfit or casual Trick-or-Treat garb. The snow didn't ruin Halloween. The National Weather Service is forecasting a clear, cool day with temperatures reaching 55 degrees. There may be rain tonight, but not until after 8 p.m., so costumes are safe. Temperatures will drop to about 41 degrees. Trick or Treat in the Historic District tonight from 4 - 6, rain or shine. This family friendly event will feature costumed spooks and trick-or-treaters can visit local retailers for treats. No cost, but don't forget your costume. Before you hit Main Street for trick or treating, snap a picture of your kid in his or her creative costume for a chance to win money for the charity of your choice and a trip to New York or Los Angeles.
