Sign says restaurant will be under new management.
Serafino’s the Italian restaurant off of Route 40 on Plumtree Drive has closed and a sign posted outside on Tuesday says the restaurant is undergoing renovations and will re-open in the summer under new management. A message left at the home of the restaurant’s owner, Joseph Mannarelli, was not returned on Tuesday. Mannarelli currently owes over $700,000 in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties from a 2012 judgment that has yet to be satisfied, according to court records. Eric King, the owner of the Shanty Grille who also owns the building in which Serafino’s operated, said he had discussed the closing with Mannarelli. He said Mannarelli is contemplating whether to change the concept or possibly sell the restaurant. “It’s not like we shut …

Customers say they're losing more than a pharmacy, they're losing family.
When I called Jodi Lare At the Watermont Pharmacy after hearing from a reader, Terri Hicks, that the pharmacy was closing, Lare's mother chimed in the background. “Terri! I know all of her family. Her cousins, second cousins, her aunt and uncle.” That’s just the kind of pharmacy Watermount is. Pharmacists and technicians had orders waiting for customers at the counter because they knew almost every face that walked in the door. And on Friday, nearly every customer got a goodbye hug. That’s because after nearly 52 years in business, the Ellicott City shop is closing. Wednesday is the last day to pick up prescriptions. The store will continue to sell off sundry items until March 8. “There have been a lot of tears. A lot of goodbyes,” Lare’s …

The 28-year-old chain continues to struggle.
Blockbuster, the brick and mortar video store that has struggled in recent years amid competition from other video rental services, such as Redbox and Netflix, is warning that it will be closing more of its unprofitable stores. Blockbuster, owned by Dish Network, plans to close “hundreds of stores in the coming weeks,” also, cutting jobs, according to a CNN Money article. But a Dish Network spokesman would not say which stores would be closing. According to the Christian Science Monitor, 300 Blockbuster stores across the country will close, with a loss of about 3,000 employees. Blockbuster has already left parts of Maryland, recently closing its final Ellicott City location and, last year, its Eldersburg store, the last remaining in …

The vintage apparel and accessories store is packing up and moving to West Annapolis.
After more than 15 years in business on Main Street, Cindy Ryland is packing up the apparel shop Retropolitan and moving to Annapolis. “I wanted to stay in the Historic District,” she said, tearing up at counter, “But nothing was available.” Ryland’s lease is up on Oct. 31, but she may leave Main Street sooner, maybe mid-October, if her new storefront in Annapolis is ready, she said. The Ellicott City resident began her 17-year tenure on Main Street at Starry Night, where she worked and eventually took over. With her daughter, who had been selling vintage clothes at Taylor’s Antiques, Ryland opened Retropolitan at 8006 Main Street in 2003. “I just love to hunt and gather,” Ryland said of her relationship with vintage and antique goods. …

The diner car is in Virginia, but may be back.
The Forest Diner closed on May 28 and for a couple of months, the iconic diner car sat empty, in disrepair, as backhoes and trucks worked around it on a new development. In late July, the developer who owned the car said the Forest Diner car was "free to a good home." No one has taken him up on the offer. The developer is having diner car restored in Virginia, according to Donald Reuwer of Waverly Real Estate. Waverly is developing the site of the former diner into a residential and commercial development. Reuwer said he did not know what would happen after the restoration was complete, likely about six months from now, he said. "We’re just going to restore it and see where it goes from that," Reuwer said Tuesday afternoon. "We’re looking …

The historic diner is free for the taking.
The Forest Diner closed on May 28. Backhoes and dump trucks have been working at the site of the nearly 70-year-old-restaurant, clearing it out for a new, mixed-use development. But the diner car that housed the restaurant still stands. “The bottom line is, we’re looking for a home for it in Howard County,” Donald Reuwer of Waverly Real Estate said Monday morning. Waverly Development is redeveloping the land on which the diner stands. “It’s tough, because on the Internet you can find a fully restored one for $20,000. This one’s a bit of a wreck.” Essentially, he said, buying a new diner car would likely be cheaper. The Forest Diner served its last cup of coffee on May 28. Former owner Will Reieh sold the property to the current owners, …

After 127 years, Yates Market is closing.
Yates Market has stood on the corner of Main and Hamilton Streets for more than 125 years, but likely won’t make 130. “It was a big decision,” said owner Betty Jacobs, as she brought merchandise out to the sidewalk on Tuesday morning. Jacobs has owned the store for 33 years, but it has been in her family since it opened in 1885. Her sister-in-law owns the building. These connections made the decision tough. “Having been a family business for so long, you feel guilty,” she said. But she wants to spend more time with her husband. “This is my life,” she said with a chuckle. “I want to retire.” Jacobs has not set a date for the official closing. “I don’t want to drive myself crazy with deadlines,” she said. “I just want to enjoy it.” Until …

After remodeling last year, the Main Street store has closed.
After five years, Original Souls on Main St. has closed its doors. The the gift shop was closed for six weeks last year for remodeling. It reopened in April of 2011. "Our purpose was to open a store with a different approach. Original Souls is a socially responsible store, and we support local and emerging artists," co-owner Sheila Morrison said at the time. But as of Feb. 28, the store has been closed. "Our vision was to create a different paradigm for doing business while also giving back to our community. We are grateful to have succeeded in this endeavor and now have decided it is time to follow other opportunities," according to a statement on the store's website. Custom pottery and other gifts are still available online. Contact …

According to the sign on the door he is closing to renovate while the article also states he owes $700K in back taxes. Sounds like somebody's not telling the truth. Is that a mistake or another "life lesson"?   more ›
