New Parking Meters into Effect in 2013, Exactly When Unclear

The county does not have a 'firm date' for when the new meters will begin collecting money.

New parking meters in Ellicott City’s Historic District have been installed and line Main Street and Maryland Avenue. The meters, which were put in place in early November, are hidden under padlocked covers, set to “go live” after Jan. 1. But when, exactly, after Jan. 1 is not yet clear.  “We don’t have a firm ‘go live’ date,” Director of Special Projects for the Department of Planning and Zoning Steve Lafferty wrote in an email on Tuesday, Dec. 31.  Lafferty said that – in large part because of the holidays – the county was not able to complete testing it needs to do before turning the meters on. “We will be sure to give businesses, residents and the public adequate notice,” he said. Free Parking in Historic Ellicott City

From Nov. 25 - Jan. 2, Main Street patrons will be able to park for free.

It’s a sign of the approaching holiday season: Free parking in Ellicott City’s historic district.  County Executive Ken Ulman announced today that parking will be free in the more than 140 metered spots in the Historic District from Nov. 25 – Jan 2.  Although meters will be free, the county is still asking that shoppers limit parking time to two hours, the same time limit as non-metered spaces. “Executive Ulman’s decision is great news; free parking impacts Historic Ellicott City’s local merchants, businesses and the patrons that support them,” Ed Lilley, President of the Ellicott City Restoration Foundation, said in a statement.
