Heavy rainfall overnight on Wednesday soaked Howard County.
A rain storm that poured down on the county overnight on Wednesday caused flooding, road closures and downed trees. The storm swept through Maryland leaving approximately two inches of rainfall in an 18-hour period, according to National Weather Service (NWS) data. On Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, the Patapsco River rose so high it nearly reached the bridge that leads into Catonsville. Officials closed Main Street in the morning due to flooding and some businesses were dealing with the after-effects. Phoenix Emporium, Great Panes and Discoveries were just some of the Main Street businesses that said they experienced flooding due to the storm. “You get used to it,” said Len Berkowitz, owner of Great Panes, who was cleaning up …
A few inches of rain in the basement isn't all that bad, according to some Main Street merchants.
The best present Mark Hemmis ever got? “My wife got me chest waders for Christmas.” The chest-high, waterproof suit with built-in boots was put to use Thursday after heavy rains Wednesday night caused Patapsco and Tiber Rivers to swell, flooding his business, Phoenix Emporium, and others along Main Street in Ellicott City’s Historic District. Hemmis seemed pleased that, after repairing an old pipe on his property, the Phoenix basement “only” got 18 inches. The Phoenix Emporium is a restaurant and bar. He lost some food, a little beer and, he said, some paper goods. Wednesday night’s rain and the ensuing flooding led the State Highway Administration to close off part of Frederick Road and Main Street Thursday morning. Water from the …

Strong showers and thunderstorms are on the way, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), and they may bring with them additional severe weather. NWS issued a tornado watch for eastern and central Maryland counties at 10:55 a.m. this morning. The worst of the storms is expected Tuesday afternoon – sometime between noon and 6 p.m., according to NWS. After saving two people stranded in floodwaters, one responder is rescued by peers.
Wednesday afternoon's rescue of a swift boat rescue responder by another rescue team started with a chance sighting of two people stranded in the Patapsco River's rising waters, according to Howard County officials. PFC Nick Bingham was driving to Main Street, where flooding had led officials to close shops and institute a voluntary evacuation. On the way, he noticed two people along River Road on top of a pick-up truck that was stuck in rising water. Bingham and an off-duty firefighter, Josh Angelo of Howard County Fire and Rescue, threw the stranded duo a life vest attached to a rope, according to a statement released by the county. One by one, Bingham and Angelo pulled the two ashore. As they reached dry land, according to the …
Video of flooding gets car enthusiasts talking.
Looking for mentions of Ellicott City in the news, something caught my eye. Yes, people were amazed by the general flooding that overtook Main Street on Wednesday, but a few car enthusiast websites had something to say about the fact that the star of one of the videos was a Mercedes SL, which sat idle while other cars passed it by. From MotorAuthority.com: An R230 series Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has fallen victim to a flash flood that hit Ellicott City, Maryland yesterday. The driver of the Mercedes attempts to proceed along a flooded street before the car stalls, attracting the attention of onlookers who happily film the event. Several Toyota vehicles of all shapes and sizes then proceed to pass the hapless Mercedes, though in fairness, …

Baltimore County fire crews had to rescue some of their own out of the Patapsco River at Frederick and River roads, after a boat they were in capsized in the river. Six firefighters were rescued, including one stranded in a tree surrounded by water, according to Det. Cathleen Batton with the Baltimore County Police Department. Four firefighters were from the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Company Swiftwater Rescue Team and two were career firefighters from the Texas Station Swiftwater Rescue Team.
The water "could easily rise."
Update 8 p.m. Main Street in Ellicott City is now open in both directions as the water from the Patapsco River has receded. Update: 4:30 p.m. The Patapsco has receded at the Main Street bridge. It's currently about a foot below street-level. -- Howard County Police are asking business owners along Main Street to evacuate as the Patapsco River threatens to rise over the Main Street bridge, flooding the area for the second time today. The rain has flooded the Tiber River, causing the Patapsco to swell as well, according to Lt. Coyle of Howard County Fire and Rescue. Main Street is closed from the Baltimore County Line to Cacao Lane restaurant. BGE has been called to cut the power as water threatens electric boxes in basements along the …
Rain continues to fall, flooding streets and stranding cars.
Update: 1:35 p.m. Howard County Fire and Rescue and Howard County Police are working to evacuate Main Street as flood waters continue to rise. -- Howard County Fire and Rescue has responded to a fire in Fulton, a swift water rescue, and a partially collapsed building in Ellicott City Wednesday as a result of the heavy rainfall, according to HCFR spokeswoman Jackie Cutler. The National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency in Howard County until 2:30 p.m. In three hours, some areas of the county have seen up to five inches of rain, and as of 1:00 p.m., it’s still coming down heavy in some places.
