County Economic Development CEO Applies to be Anne Arundel County Executive

Laura Neuman is one of 16 applicants for the newly open job.

Howard County's Economic Development Authority CEO, Laura Neuman, is one of 16 candidates who have submitted applications this month to become Anne Arundel County Executive. Neuman, a former entreprenuer and private sector CEO, has lived in Anne Arundel for over 20 years. She joined the Economic Development Authority in the spring of 2011. The county executive position became open after the former county executive, John Leopold, a Republican, resigned on Feb. 1 in the wake of being found guilty of misconduct in office. By law, the Anne Arundel County Council is charged with replacing Leopold with another Republican. County to Help Entrepreneurial Veterans

The Howard County Economic Development Authority is launching a new program this spring.

For many veterans returning home, finding work has been a challenge.  “I’m 27 years old and I’m applying for internships,” former Staff Sergeant Stephanie Gilbert told Patch in an interview last year. “It’s disconcerting when a 19-year-old gets the internship instead of me. It’s like, ‘What?’”  To help veterans who want to start their own businesses, the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) has launched a new training program called Project Opportunity. “When veterans are returning from the battlefield, among the first questions they ask is ‘what’s next?’” Laura A. EDA Head Wants to Bring Tech, Capital to Howard County

Laura Neuman has long-term plans for economic development.

In his State of the County address Thursday, County Executive Ken Ulman echoed the words of Economic Development Authority CEO Laura Neuman when he warned of successful communities becoming complacent. In fact, Neuman said during an interview on And Then There’s That, a HoCoMojo podcast, “Our greatest risk is that we’ve done so well.” Neuman joined the EDA in mid-April of last year and has since brought in her own hires in six positions in an effort to bring her “private-sector” approach to the organization. She told HoCoMojo that the job has been “great fun,” and that although she sees herself returning to the private sector – where she was a successful equity-builder – she plans to remain at the EDA for the “foreseeable future.”  “I can …
