Police Sobriety Checkpoint Social Media Post Sparks Questions

Howard County Police confronted questions from the public on a planned sobriety checkpoint this weekend.

A routine press release from the Howard County Police Department on an upcoming sobriety checkpoint this weekend generated 89 shares, 64 “likes” and more than 25 comments on Facebook. What was all the fuss about? Reactions to the Tuesday post from the department ranged from worries about drinking and driving, texting and driving, to questioning why the police department had to inform the public prior to a sobriety checkpoint --- doesn’t that defeat the purpose? “I think it's stupid that the police [department] has to tell the public these things,” wrote Robin Maldonado-Shaw on the Howard County Police Department Facebook page. “You drink and drive you should go to jail! State Police on the Lookout for Drunk, Aggressive Drivers this Holiday Weekend

The Maryland State police said they will be out in force through the July 4th holiday.

Although July fourth is not until next Wednesday, Maryland state troopers will begin a statewide increased traffic enforcement initiative this weekend in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries during the upcoming holiday period. Beginning this weekend, each of the 22 Maryland State Police barrack commanders will be deploying drunk driving patrols that will continue throughout the July fourth holiday. A news release said the additional troopers will specifically work to get drunk drivers off the road before they injure or kill other people. Special patrols will also be targeting speeding and aggressive drivers. State Police commanders have reviewed crash data for their area and are deploying these additional patrols in the …

Be Aware: Sobriety Checkpoint Aims to Curb Holiday Crashes

The Howard County Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the county this week.

Howard County police are giving drivers fair warning: Drive sober or face the consequences. Police will be watching for drunk drivers especially closely this week with a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location.  On average, five people are killed in impaired-driving crashes between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, according to Howard County police. On Dec. 10 of last year, a 22-year-old Elkridge man died when his car swerved off Montgomery Road in Ellicott City and crashed into a house, igniting his car and setting the house on fire.  The victim's blood-alcohol level was .20, according to the report -- more than twice the legal driving alcohol limit of .08 -- and he was not wearing a seat belt.
