Before the release of his fiscal year 2014 operating budget proposal, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said in a statement that the propsed budget has record funding for education and a big boost for public safety. "We want to make sure that we continue to invest to maintain the quality of life in this county," said Ulman. Ulman announced the budget with a news release and interview with Patch, but the county did not distribute a copy of the budget on Friday as they were still working on it. The deadline to release the budget is Sunday, according to David Nitkin, communications director for the county. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman wrote in a blog post Friday that he was going to vote for school board candidates Janet Siddiqui, Jackie Scott and Ellen Flynn Giles as part of early voting at the Florence Bain Center on Friday. "I have worked with both Ellen and Janet for a number of years, and I know how committed they are to ensuring our students receive a top-notch education," wrote Ulman on why he made the decision to support those three candidates in a competitive Howard County Board of Education race. The Republican State Senator announces his intentions at a breakfast fundraiser in Ellicott City.
Republican State Sen. Allan Kittleman, of West Friendship, told supporters at a breakfast fundraiser on Wednesday morning that if he gets the funds and support, he plans on running for county executive in 2014, according to an article on Explore Howard. In the article, Kittleman said he commissioned a poll this spring that surveyed 450 county voters. That poll, administered by a Republican political research firm, showed Kittleman 20 points ahead of likely Democratic candidates Del. Guy Guzzone and County Council member Courtney Watson, according to the article.
