Don't have plans for Memorial Day? Try one of these activities to help keep you and your family entertained.

Go Fishing! The weather Memorial Day weekend is expected to float around the mid-70s, meaning great fishing weather. The Patapsco River in Ellicott City is home mostly to sunfish, smallmouth bass, and rainbow trout, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). DNR also recommends Centennial Lake on the Columbia/ Ellicott City line, which includes species such as largemouth bass, channel catfish, trout and the rare tiger muskie. DNR reports tiger muskies have been in stocked in the lake since 1995 and there are some now over 36 inches that “provide an explosive fight for anglers who hook into one.” Remember, don’t forget to obtain a fishing license, if you’re older than 16. 'Peeping Tom' Sentenced to 11 Years for Secretly Recording Ellicott City Women

Michael McKenny pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Howard County Circuit Court.

A Columbia man pleaded guilty Tuesday to secretly videotaping two women inside their Ellicott City condominium and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Police arrested Michael Stephen McKenny in October of 2012 after investigating a hidden camera found inside a Montgomery Run Road condo in Ellicott City. The investigation began in September when a 29-year-old Ellicott City woman told police she found a hidden camera in her bedroom that was focused on her bathroom. According to charging documents, the camera, which began recording when it detected movement, secretly recorded the 29-year-old and a 30-year-old roommate in their bedrooms and bathrooms. Police determined McKenny first entered the condo on June 26, then returned at least four …

Jayson Blair Reflects on Resignation from New York Times

May 1, 2013 will mark the 10-year anniversary of Blair's resignation from the paper of record. Today, he works as a life coach.

In the journalism world, the names of plagiarists are noted in the industry's history. But perhaps none is as notorious as Columbia native Jayson Blair. Blair resigned on May 1, 2003 from the New York Times after a string of improper journalistic practices that the Times called "a profound betrayal of trust and a low point in the 152-year history of the newspaper." This week is the 10-year anniversary of his resignation. On Monday, he spoke with Patch about his past, what he's doing now, and how his notoriety affects his life. "A number of TV stations and newspapers have reached out to me this week," said Blair. "Most of them either want to look at what had happened or they want to look at the change in my life. I've been dodging most if …

Pope Francis Elected: Howard County Catholics Excited by Choice

The Rev. Msgr. Joseph Luca said, "He is known as an exceptionally humble, gentle person with a heart for the downtrodden and the poor."

Catholics around the world and in Howard County are reacting with excitement to the news that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected pope. At 3:22 p.m. EDT Wednesday, Bergoglio, who took the name Pope Francis, appeared on the balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square after news outlets reported that white smoke was pouring from a Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the election of a new pope. Roman Catholic Church cardinals began meeting Tuesday at the Vatican. The 115 voting cardinals took four or five votes over two days, USA Today reported. The Guardian describes Bergoglio as "a Jesuit intellectual who travels by bus and has a practical approach to poverty." In Howard County, the news of the new pope was met with …
