Is The Best School System In The Galaxy Failing My Kids?
I moved to Columbia from Michigan as a “gifted and talented” high school junior. The school I left had no Advanced Placement (or International Baccalaureate, if that was a thing then) classes. Academically speaking, over the following several months at Oakland Mills High School, I got my butt kicked on a daily basis. (Go Scorps!). And it was good. I graduated with enough AP credits to finish undergraduate school in three years and mitigate the cost of my ironically out-of-state education at Michigan State. (Go Spartans!). Proposal has many 'exciting' components but kinks, as well, members say.
After nearly two and a half hours of discussions, clarifications and additional information from Howard County Public School System officials, Board of Education members on Thursday failed to decide the fate of proposed changes to the middle school instructional program. A final vote was postponed until next month. School system administrators told the board the proposal is in the best interest of students, will best serve to prepare them for college and careers, and puts schools in line with pending national curriculum changes. The teachers association is opposed to the plan on many levels.
Board of Education members have heard the testimony from educators, parents and students. They've studied the recommendations made by administrators and they've asked questions—all in an effort to make a decision on whether to eliminate separate reading classes and make other changes in Howard County public middle schools. Tonight, board members will vote on the proposal. The proposal is a multifaceted plan that calls for changing the daily class schedule, eliminates separate reading classes in favor of folding that specialized instruction into core subject classes, increases physical education class time and adds world languages to the sixth-grade curriculum. I agree with jack I've seen to many kids in hcpss just slide by in school with not learning a thing. The teachers aren't worrying about teaching there just worried about getting paid there are so many kids I no that constantly fail and still aren't receiving the proper help or some kids are even being alowed to pass when they shouldn't just because the teachers don't want to deal with them.
