Reports of Stephen Alex Rane paint the picture of a gregarious, inquisitive young man with a kind streak.
The 22-year-old Centennial High School graduate who was shot and killed last week in College Park was an extrovert who “wasn’t afraid to raise his hand,” the University of Maryland student newspaper, the Diamondback, reported. Stephen Alex Rane was a senior at the University of Maryland, where he studied English and linguistics. Police say he was shot and killed by his roommate, 23-year-old Dayvone Maurice Green, last week. According to his obituary, Rane was born in Lafayette, Ind. in 1990. Green, the University of Maryland graduate student identified as the shooter in last week's apparent murder-suicide in College Park, had to undergo a state background check to purchase the 9mm handgun used to kill his roommate. But Green, who was schizophrenic, according to reports, did not have to undergo a state background check to purchase the semi-automatic Uzi .22 caliber rifle police found fully loaded next to his body. The tragic events in College Park have raised questions about the effectiveness of state gun laws in preventing the sale of deadly firearms to those suffering from mental illness. The victim in Tuesday's fatal University of Maryland, College Park shooting attended high school in Ellicott City, according to school officials. Stephen Rane, 22, of Silver Spring, attended Centennial High School, according to Rebecca Amani-Dove, Howard County Public Schools spokesperson. She could not, however, verify when or whether he graduated. The Baltimore Sun has reported Rane graduated in 2009. He was an undergraduate student at University of Maryland, where he studied English, according to an article he wrote for the school's newspaper.
