Iron Girl Half Marathon Raises $25,000 for HC General Hospital

More than 2,500 runners participated in the event on Sunday in downtown Columbia.

TriColumbia raised $25,000 for cancer research at Howard County General Hospital during its first-ever Iron Girl Half Marathon in downtown Columbia on Sunday. More than 2,500 runners ages 8-75 participated in the all-female half marathon and coed 5k race, which was held to benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, according to TriColumbia. Askale Maerachi, 25, of Washington, D.C., finished first in the half marathon with a time of 1:17:06. Ellicott City's Joanna Gavigan, 25, came in 8th place in the 5k, while Norah MacPhee, of Columbia, was the top 5k female finisher with a time of 22:13. Lanterns Bring Light, Hope to Main Street

The Lanterns of Hope brings Cherrybration Days to Ellicott City.

On National Arbor Day, Blossoms of Hope brought its annual Cherrybration Days festivities to Ellicott City with the Lanterns of Hope parade. During the spring, Blossoms of Hope sponsors several events in conjunction with the Howard County Library System and Howard County Tourism to bring in the spring and support the organization's fundraising activities. "We honor the cherry trees that we have planted all around Howard County," said Victoria Goodman, executive director of Blossoms of Hope.  "We celebrate our trees tonight and the hope that they have brought to the community through the funds they have raised."  To date, she Friday evening, before the parade, sponsored cherry tree plantings have raised more than $142,000 for the Claudia …

Think Spring: Blossoms of Hope Flower Sale

Looking to support a local charity and brighten up your day?

Blossoms of Hope is selling flowers outside of the Howard County Welcome Center today. Stop by for flowers in support of the charity, which works to beautify Howard County as well as support the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center. While you're there, take in some history at the Welcome Center.
