Police Investigating Howard County Mail Thefts

Someone is stealing checks from outgoing mail and cashing them, said police.

Howard County Police are advising residents to take precautions when placing checks in mailboxes after a string of mail thefts were reported in the county. Police have received seven reports of checks being stolen from their outgoing mail in Laurel and Clarksville. "In each case, a suspect looks for mailboxes with red flags up, indicating there is outgoing mail in the box to be picked up," stated police. "The suspect then steals checks from the outgoing mail, alters the payee's information and then goes to a branch of the victim's bank to cash the checks." Due to the recent thefts, police are encouraging residents to drop their checks at a local post office or inside a residential blue post office box. Police asked that residents who …

Alleged Police Impersonator Caught Hiding in Bushes

Police say the man accused in a "road rage" incident impersonated an officer and ripped the panel off a car.

A man involved in an incident described as “road rage” by the Howard County Police posed as a police officer, snatched a phone from the victim’s hand and then ripped a panel off of the victim’s car, according to charging documents.  Police ultimately found Brian Paul Moore, 35, of Gaithersburg, hiding in the bushes in Clarksville, according to the documents. He faces charges for impersonating a police officer, assault, robbery and theft.  According to the documents, Moore was driving behind the victim on July 25 when he crossed the double line to pass him, striking the victim’s car twice.  The victim stopped his car at Brighton Dam Road and Highland Road and got out of his car. It was a little odd. I have to believe that the panel the suspect ripped off was damaged from the collision. Otherwise, he must have supers-strength or something.   more ›

Sustainable Shopping Center Planned for Gateway School Site

The "pedestrian-oriented" shopping center is the first phase of a plan for the old Gateway School property.

The former site of the Gateway School in Clarksville could be getting greener–with grass, trees and money–as Howard County's plans for a pedestrian-friendly retail complex move forward. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman announced the county agreed to sell the old Gateway School property to GreenStone Ventures II for $5 million, with plans to replace it with a development featuring pedestrian-oriented shops, restaurants and a farmer's market "concept." "The redevelopment of this site is important for this area of Clarksville, and that is why we have worked so hard with the community and the purchaser to find a solution," Ulman said in a statement. "We believe this project will become a dynamic and unique destination." Access to the site has…

Running With His Legs, Not Without His Arm

The fastest member of the River Hill High School cross country team, Marshall Demaree, who has only one arm, follows in his sister’s record-setting footsteps.

“It was an unfortunate accident but he doesn’t dwell on it,” said Earl Lauer, coach of the River Hill cross country team, regarding his star athlete, Marshall Demaree. Demaree lost an arm six years ago. “I think he has accepted it. It hasn’t hampered him at all psychologically.” Apparently it hasn’t hampered him too much physically, either. Demaree, 14, a sophomore, bested the other 51 boys on his team during time trials held the first week of practice when he ran a mile-and-a-half in 7 minutes, 48 seconds. “I think I could get it down to 7:30 flat,” said Demaree, who admits to liking “competition, getting better times each race, and meeting my goals.” When Demaree was 8, he was in a car accident while on vacation in Florida. His left arm …
