This survey is by invitation only, does not go out to all the over 27,000 public highschools, does not include private schools or reflect homeschooled children. Since it is by invitation it is something the hcpss actively participates in and touts the results albeit they are very deceptive and do not address the fact we have almost no career training, our high remedial ed rate and low college …   more ›

Centennial Student Asks Out Prom Date With a Serenade

Bobby Chin asked out his prom date with a song that has gone viral.

Do you remember how your prom date asked you out for the big night? Chances are Sofia, a Centennial High School student, won’t be forgetting how 18-year-old Bobby Chin asked her to Centennial’s senior prom, scheduled for this weekend (April 20). With a flower in his hair and a friend casually strumming a guitar nearby in the high school hallway, Chin sang about how he met Sofia six months ago. He sang about her smile and how it made him laugh. “What are you doing on 4/20? That’s our prom, want to go with somebody?” he sang as a crowd of students gathered behind her. And the kicker, which came with the deliverance of a flower: “Make my dreams come true.” Chin’s song – and the video of it -- was so endearing it was covered by the New York …

It seems to be a big thing around here that a "grand gesture" is "needed" or done when asking someone to the prom. I have heard about using the homeroom announcement, inserting the question into a cooperative teachers classroom powerpoint presentation, and covering a car with post it notes. :)   more ›

Depends on how/when she was asked. Sometimes a call for a comment is right then and there and the opportunity to research is not an option. I am not sure why this is a big deal. Do you believe she was deliberately rude? To what end? Maybe I am missing something that would make sense of this? At any rate, what a terribly sad tragic event. My sympathies to the families of ALL involved here.   more ›

4 Things to Know about Ellicott City Today

Head into the day a little more informed.

We should see a little relief from the oppressive heat today. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 82 degrees with clear, sunny skies. Phew. George Herman "Babe" Ruth announced his intent to retire from baseball on this day in 1935. Ruth was actually married right here in Ellicott City. Mike Radinsky has the story.   If you want to check out the roads before heading to work (or out for a long weekend), visit the SHA Chart website. You can see where the accidents, heavy traffic and other incidents are.  Centennial High School seniors are graduating today. Congratulations! The ceremony is at 4 p.m. at Merriweather Post Pavillion. Roads will likely be busy around rush hour, so if you drive that way, you may want to take a …
