Mandated federal budget cuts, if not averted, could impact the large federal presence in Maryland.
Maryland's congressional Democrats are taking to Twitter Thursday afternoon to talk about the coming sequestration cuts to federal budgets. The cuts, equally split between defense and non-defense spending, could have a large impact on Maryland if not averted. Civil employees could be furloughed a day per pay period, and the cuts would also impact work at military bases in Maryland, including at Fort Meade and Aberdeen Proving Ground. In Elkridge on Wednesday, Gov. Martin O'Malley said sequestration could cost 12,000 jobs in Maryland. Local business and political leaders are speaking out about possible harmful effects to the local economy if the federal government’s plan to make automatic cuts, dubbed sequestration, happens next month. “The worst part about it is the lack of predictability,” said Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, on the C4 Show Thursday morning. Without action from Congress, the sequester would go into effect automatically on March 1, reducing spending in a number of areas, including education, the environment, health, military and law enforcement, the White House said. Industry-sponsored analysis finds that as a result of the debt-ceiling deal, Defense Department and other jobs are at risk.
Maryland could lose as many as 115,000 jobs next year when automatic federal budget cuts go into effect, according to a study commissioned by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). Many of those losses could come from one of Howard County's largest employers -- the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. “The Economic Impact of the Budget Control Act of 2011” predicts that the automatic cuts, known as the “sequestration” mandate, could lead to more than 2 million job losses nationwide.
