Find Cherry Blossoms in Ellicott City

Here are 10 Blossoms of Hope sites to visit once Howard County's cherry blossoms begin to bloom.

Want to experience the blooming of the cherry blossoms, but would rather stay in Ellicott City than travel to the Washington, D.C. festival? You've got plenty of options. Each year, and usually about two weeks after the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., Howard County hosts Blossoms of Hope, which features 1,600 cherry trees throughout the region. Howard County can expect peak blooms two to three weeks after the cherry blossoms in D.C. bloom, which is expected to be this weekend. Here are 10 locations in Howard County where cherry blossoms are either blooming or being planted. Have other spots where you love to see cherry blossoms? Tell us about it in comments.

Peak Bloom for Blossoms in DC This Weekend, Later in Howard County

A group in Howard County has planted over 1,000 Kwanzan trees, which bloom later than those in Washington, DC.

Those looking to see a rite of Spring in the Mid-Atlantic should head down to the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC this weekend for the peak bloom of the cherry trees. The official estimated peak dates are April 3 to 6 (that's Wednesday through Saturday), according to the National Park Service. Here in Howard County, however, you'll need to wait about two to three weeks for the more than 1,000 cherry trees planted by Blossoms of Hope to start blooming. Why? The trees planted around the Tidal Basin are mostly Yoshinos, according to the Park Service, while Blossoms of Hope planted mostly Kwanzans. The earliest cherry trees in Washington date back to 1912, when 3,020 cherry trees were given to the United States by Japan. Of the original 3,020, …

Photo of the Day: Real Men Wear Pink Tutus

Blossoms of Hope supporters donned pink tutus to give a gift to the Claudia Mayer Cancer Center on Wednesday.

People sometimes say 'real men wear pink', but do real men also wear pink tutus? If they're supporting the fight against breast cancer, they do. On Wednesday morning supporters of Blossoms of Hope sported pink tutus to drop off a special photograph and book at the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center at Howard County General Hospital. The photograph is a framed shot from photographer Bob Carey's book "Ballerina." The book consists of a series of photographs of the not-so-skinny Carey in different locations around the country wearing nothing but a pink tutu. Carey was inspired to create the book to raise money to research breast cancer after his wife was diagnosed with the disease. Blossoms of Hope executive director Victoria Goodman …

Blossoms of Hope has awarded a kick-off grant for beautification projects.

Ellicott City is about to get more beautiful. Blossoms of Hope: The Howard County Cherry Tree Project has awarded a $1,000 grant to the Ellicott City Restoration Foundation for the establishment of a fund for "beautification projects" in the Historic District. "We  believe the town plays an integral role in our project's success," Blossoms of Hope Executive Director Victoria Goodman said in a statement, noting that two of the organization's cherry tree groves are in Ellicott City.  Given the ECRF's "longtime, well-respected stewardship of the historic town," Goodman wrote, "We are confident that this donation will be used to further Ellicott City as an attraction during Howard County Cherrybration Days blossoming season and beyond." Pink Plates and Snow in April

Local restaurants celebrate Cherry Blossom season with special fundraising event.

The District isn't the only area around here that sees canopies of pink lining streets and sidewalks–Howard County has seen its fair share of cherry blossom blooms over the past week, too. Cherry tree buds in the area opened prematurely, according to The Washington Post, which described the scene as "snowing" with petals. But they’re just in time for the Blossoms of Hope Pink Plate specials program, which begins April 1 and runs through the end of the month. In support of the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center at Howard County General Hospital, local restaurants will offer pink-themed specials on their menus – think specialty drinks and cherry-flavored desserts. “The local restaurant community in Howard County has given generously to our…
