Operators of the Maryland Live! Casino said they will move quickly to add live table games and expand its hours, now that voters have approved a referendum on expanded gambling in the state. The Cordish Cos. said it will be ready to go once the state issues the necessary regulations to govern table games and 24-hour operations. The company said it will be hiring for as many as 1,000 new positions. "Maryland Live! looks forward to enhancing its gaming offering and is prepared to Go Live! with table games—physical modifications and hiring for over 1,000 new positions—soon after the State issues the necessary governing regulations," the company said in a statement. Free gambling Wednesday caused highways around Arundel Mills to turn into parking lots, according to drivers.
Drivers on Routes 100 and 295 were slowed to a crawl by Arundel Mills Wednesday around lunchtime, if they were lucky. Maryland Live! casino, located in Hanover, rang in the announcement of more than 1,000 additional slot machines by offering $100 in free gambling money to subscribers on its email list. More than 20,000 visitors came to the casino on Wednesday, according to Carmen Gonzales, Maryland Live! spokeswoman, who did not specify how many visitors the casino averaged daily. On opening night, the casino attracted more than 10,000 visitors. Route 100 near 295 was "an absolute nightmare," posted one user to Twitter on Sept. 12. Driver should note a casino event at Maryland Live! by Arundel Mills will snarl Wednesday evening's commute, said officials.
Traffic will be "extremely heavy" on MD 295 and Arundel Mills Boulevard in the late afternoon, according to the State Highway Administration (SHA). Route 100 at Arundel Mills Boulevard may also be congested. SHA recommends using I-95, US 1 (Washington Boulevard) and US 29 (Columbia Pike) as alternate routes. Maryland Live! at Arundel Mills is now the third largest casino in the United States, based on the number of slot machines. On Wednesday, the Maryland Lottery and Maryland Live!’s developers unveiled 1,043 new slot machines at the Hanover casino, bringing its total to 4,750 machines. The two biggest casinos in the nation are both in Connecticut: Foxwoods with 7,000 machines and Mohegan Sun with more than 6,400. The casino in Anne Arundel County opened June 7. Since then, the entertainment facility has added The Cheesecake Factory restaurant and Rams Head Center Stage.
