An organizer said the race through Town Center in Columbia will have a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Organizers of the Iron Girl Half Marathon, set to take place in Columbia’s Town Center later this month, said Wednesday they are working with police to bolster security after a bombing at the Boston Marathon on Monday killed three and injured more than 130. “We are working with police and emergency management services to address additional security measures and procedures for the race,” said Kari Ebeling, chief operating officer of TriColumbia. “We’re going to take all the precautions they advise us to take,” she said. Tatyana McFadden took the women's first place in the wheelchair division.
Clarksville native Tatyana McFadden keeps coming in first. The wheelchair racer came in first place in the Boston Marathon's wheelchair division - her first time entering the race. "It was a really tough race," she told WBZ-TV’s Jonathan Elias afterwards. "I let my training and the support from the crowd carry me home." McFadden brought home four medals from the London 2012 Paralypic games: three gold medals and one bronze. Then she went on to place first in the Chicago Marathon women's wheelchair race, the Chicago Tribune reported. "I raced my hardest today," McFadden told Elias. "Today it worked in my favor." An explosion Monday at the Boston Marathon came at the worst place at the worst time, according to a Maryland runner who has participated in the prestigious race numerous times. Mike Gimbel, who has run the Boston Marathon eight of the last 10 years, said the area of the explosion near Boylston Street is one of the most populated areas. "The majority of the fans and police are located in that area," said Gimbel. "There's 23,000 runners and everyone is there, some times 100 deep, trying to see their loved ones finishing the race. Rice will appear at Wegmans Columbia to host a special fundraising event for two charities.
Is Wegmans in Columbia becoming a new hub for celebrity appearances? Last week, it was announced celebrity chef Bobby Flay will be signing copies of his barbecue book. Now, Wegmans announced the star running back of the Baltimore Ravens, Ray Rice, will appear at the grocery store on April 11. Rice is scheduled to appear from 5 to 7 p.m. to host a conversation and question and answer session. Tickets cost $100 each, with proceeds going to one of two charities: The Ray Rice Charitable Foundation (which focuses on anti-bullying) or the Arc of Howard County (a local charity that helps people with developmental and intellectual disabilities). Kristin Grogan isn't the biggest or the strongest, but she's one of the best.
Kristin Grogan can’t hold back her frustration. Despite playing a far inferior team, she and her partner are struggling to find their groove on the foosball table. Grogan, normally exceptional on defense, has already let in a couple of goals. With the ball in their offensive zone, her partner turns it over. Their opponent, half shooting and half attempting to clear the ball, fires a rocket across the table that somehow weaves through the plastic players and bounces past Grogan for a goal. Grogan peers into the goal with wonder, as if asking “How did that go in?” Her team has fallen behind. A small crowd gathers around their table at the Maryland State Foosball Championships.
