Budget Hearing Wednesday; Light Snow Predicted into Tuesday: Week Ahead

Tragedy strikes twice in Ellicott City, take your dog through Symphony of Lights on Tuesday... here's what's happening this week in Ellicott City.


County Executive's First 2015 Budget Hearing - County Executive Ken Ulman is scheduled to host is his first budget hearing for Fiscal Year 2015 on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Speakers interested in promoting ideas they believe the county should spend money on are encouraged to signup to speak. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City.

Snowy Weather Then Warm Temperatures - The National Weather Service predicts snow to fall Monday night, less than an inch, then continue Tuesday, with less than a half an inch falling. Tuesday's high is expected near 40, with a nighttime low around 28.

The weather will warm up towards the end of the week, reports the weather service. Wednesday is expected to be clear with a high near 37, then Thursday the high is expected to reach 48. On Friday it should get almost warm, with temperatures reaching 55 on a cloudy day. 

Rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the upper 40s.

Markovitz Plans Run for County Council - Lisa Markovitz, an Ellicott City Democrat and the vice president of the Howard County Citizens' Association, announced over the weekend she plans to run for the District 1 County Council seat being vacated by Courtney Watson.

Markovitz led a petition drive to bring parts of Howard County's comprehensive zoning bill to a referendum, which was recently tabled after a legal challenge, said she wants to focus on the pace of development in the county and making sure it's coordinated with infrastructure improvements, according to a Howard County Times report.

Tragic Weekend in Howard County - Two sudden deaths shook Ellicott City over the weekend. In the first one, on Saturday, the driver of a Lincoln town car was killed after he drove the wrong way on Route 40 and collided head-on into a Toyota Camry.

In the second, a man was found dead in the icy waters of Centennial Lake early Sunday. Police initially said the man, described as in his 50s, may have slipped and fallen into the lake. No foul play is suspected at this time, said police.

Neither man has been identified yet by police.

Tail Lights is Tuesday - Tail Lights, the annual dog walk through the Symphony of Lights at Symphony Woods in Downtown columbia, is scheduled for this Tuesday. It was supposed to take place last Tuesday, but was rescheduled due to the snow. The event takes place from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. and costs $10 per walker.
