Patch Picks: Local Nonprofits Making a Difference

These neighborhood organizations are reaching the community.

From the BoH website: "Blossoms of Hope beautifies Howard County, promotes wellness, creates tourism opportunities for family togetherness and improves the lives of those in our community coping with cancer."

Since its inception in 2003, 500 new trees are now growing across the county and more than $100,000 has been contributed to the Howard County Hospital Foundation, earmarked for the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center. For more information on sponsoring a tree, planting one in your yard, annual "Cherrybration" events or to make a contribution, visit their website or call 443-538-0858.

Better Bedrest  

Located in Savage and founded in 1993 as an outreach program for pregnancies at risk, Better Bedrest is an advocacy, public awareness and volunteer-driven, nonprofit. It aims to provide support, resources and information to pregnant women who are on bed rest.

According to their website, with partners such as Howard County General Hospital, Better BedRest shines a light on a growing prenatal problem that affects more than 700,000 women in the U.S. each year. Women needing guidance can contact their helpline at 410-740-7662. Others wishing to volunteer or make a contribution can visit their website for information.

Since 1942, Elkridge Fire Department has been serving the community. Currently, with two engines; a rescue squad; a paramedic ambulance; a BLS ambulance and a host of community events, they continue to reach out to the immediate area and beyond. From youth dances, bingo and pancake breakfasts, the department is constantly hosting events that will benefit the community while carrying out its mission to keep residents safe. From the club website: "The Laurel Boys and Girls Club was first organized in the spring of 1955, as the Laurel Athletic League, to provide a baseball program for local boys."

Since then, it has grown to become the largest Boys and Girls Club in the state of Maryland. Serving more than 4,000 children, offering 12 different sports activities and numerous after school programs, they continue to work with the greater Laurel area in providing recreational and enrichment programs for youth and their families. Located in Columbia, Grassroots is a 24-hour resource to individuals and families in need. Members of the community who are experiencing a crisis and seeking help, advice, or a place to stay should contact them for assistance.

According to their website, Grassroots is an emergency and transitional shelter, a 24-hour phone and walk-in crisis center and an educational resource for all. They serve Howard County and other nearby communities. Community members can contribute to the center by preparing meals, donating items for the shelter or making a monetary donation.  Anyone seeking assistance should contact their crisis line at 410-531-6677.
