2 Hearts 2 Miles Run to Benefit Nass and Mayr Scholarship Funds

The August race will raise funds for scholarships set up in honor of the two women tragically killed in an Ellicott City train derailment last year.

Next month will mark the one year anniversary of the Ellicott City train derailment that killed local teens Elizabeth Nass and Rose Mayr.

The 19-year-olds were sitting on the CSX bridge around midnight on Aug. 20, 2012 when the train derailed, causing 21 cars to slip off the tracks, many dumping their loads of coal.

On August 17, a memorial run is scheduled called the "2 Miles for 2 Hearts Memorial Run in Ellicott City" in honor of Nass and Mayr.

The run will serve as a fundraiser for the scholarship funds set up by the families of the women—the Elizabeth Nass Scholarship and the Rose Mayr Nursing Scholarship—as well as for Howard County's Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

Sue Nass, Elizabeth's mother, said in a statement that organizers are still recruiting sponsors for the event.

"We have been surprised and pleased with the support we've received so far, but are hopeful this is an event that the entire community can get behind," said Nass.

Russell Allwein, one of the event's organizers, said anyone interested in sponsoring the memorial run can email 2milesfor2hearts@gmail.com for more information.

The event is being organized by friends of the Ross and Mayr families and local leaders.

"This is a great way to remember these two wonderful girls in a celebration of their life, energy and spirit," said Courtney Watson, the County Council member who represents Ellicott City, in a statement. "I look forward to seeing our active Howard County community coming out to support the Nass and Mayr families."

As of July 9, a total of 494 runners signed up to participate in the Memorial run on a Facebook Group created for the event.

The race route begins at the Circuit Courthouse on Court House Drive in Ellicott City, heads up Court House Dr., loops around the top of the hill near the county government building, and then descends down Ellicott Mills Dr and finishes near the Main St. intersection.

The entrance fee is $25 before July 31, $30 through Aug. 15 and $35 on race day. You can register by clicking here.
