Construction Nearly Complete on Route 40 Bridge Over Patapsco River

The Route 40 bridge will have all four lanes open during peak hours starting this week.

Since 2010, orange barrels and construction crews have been a constant feature of the Route 40 bridge over the Patapsco River near the Ellicott City and Catonsville line.

But on Tuesday the State Highway Administration announced that all travel lanes will be open on the bridge during peak travel times starting this week.

Previously, lanes were shifted to single lanes on both the eastbound and westbound travel lanes. The lanes were shifted while SHA made improvements to the 77-year-old concrete arch bridge.

"The improvements preserved the historic arch design and added decades to the service life of the bridge," said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters, in a statement. "While work continues, we urge drivers to continue to stay alert and drive carefully through the work zone area."
