St. John’s Jewelers has been in the business for 40 years and we have seen a lot of proposals. We have been thrilled to be part of the process. We have seen just about everything from the simple “Will You Marry Me?” to the “surprise of a lifetime proposal in Central Park.” Based on our experiences we would like to offer a few tips for what to do when getting ready to “pop the question.”
1. Research Her Style
About 50% of women (according to theknot.com) are involved in picking out their ring. However, these days more men are going at it alone. At St. John’s Jewelers, we are seeing a lot of men referencing their girlfriends’ Pinterest pages. We have seen a lot of interest in Megan Thorne Fine Jewels and Gabriel & Co. coming from Pinterest Pins.
2. Establish a Price Range and Find Out Her Ring Size
Set a budget and stick to it. Sometimes prices are negotiable, so don’t be afraid to ask. And, do your research. If your first choice is not in your price range, have an alternative. Make sure your jeweler knows what your first choice is though – a reputable jeweler will do everything to help you find what you are looking for while meeting your budget.

To find out her ring size, try to swipe a ring from her jewelry box and take it to the jewelry store for them to measure. Or you can always get the ring sized after you propose. This is also a good time for the bride-to-be to get to know the jeweler and look at wedding band selections.
3. Select a Diamond
So, you already know your budget and you have researched her style, now comes the fun of picking a diamond. A diamond is a diamond, right? Actually there is a lot more to it and if you have already done some research then you probably already know about the four C’s: color, cut, clarity and carat weight. Most jewelers can show you a variety of diamonds based on your budget and shape preference, but “know before you go.” The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) offers some additional advice for buying a diamond.

4. Find a Reputable Jeweler
Buying a diamond should be fun and exciting and NEVER intimidating or boring. Make sure you feel comfortable with the jeweler that you choose and that you trust them. If a sales associate feels like they are pressuring you then you might be in the wrong place. The right jeweler will go out of their way to help you find the PERFECT ring even if they have to custom make it for you. Don’t assume you have to buy a setting the way you see it. If you want less or more, just ask. And, check-in with family and friends (if they can keep a secret!) Word-of-mouth referrals usually work best when shopping for something special.
5. Pop The Question
Proposals can be grand or they can be simple. You know your girlfriend best.
