Wrestling: Mt. Hebron's Stewart, Centennial's Kraisser Lock Up Region

Both wrestlers score wins in the regional tournament and advance to the state championship tournament next weekend at the University of Maryland. They will be joined by 15 others from Howard County.

Losses in championship matches were starting to become a disturbing trend for Mt. Hebron High wrestlers.

Two straight tournaments, six straight defeats in the finals.

Senior tri-captain Alex Stewart ended the frustrating streak Saturday night at Wilde Lake, capturing the 4A/3A East Region crown at 119 pounds with a grueling 5-3 overtime decision over Anne Arundel County champ Collin Harrell of Broadneck.

Stewart (32-7), second in both the Howard County and Meade tournaments, countered a near takedown by Harrell (32-6) with 37 seconds left in overtime with a takedown of his own to earn the title and a top seed at next weekend’s state tournament at the University of Maryland’s Cole Field House.

Stewart, who dropped back-to-back decisions to once-beaten Ian Hochuli of Marriotts Ridge in the title bouts at Meade and the county tournament, admitted that those two setbacks left him doubting his chances of earning one of the top four seeds in the state tournament.

“Possible, yes,” he said Saturday after winning. “Likely, no.”

Reservoir, with three champions and two runners-up, won the team title with heavyweight Josh Hamilton’s pin of Mt. Hebron’s A.J. Wade in the final bout of the night. The Gators, needing only a win by decision by the unbeaten Hamilton, finished with 119.5 points to outlast Old Mill (117) and South River (110) in the 21-team event.

Mt. Hebron, which also got a second from Jon Iwaskiw at 189 pounds, was 10th with 61.5 points. Centennial, which got a third straight regional title from Nathan Kraisser (125), was 13th at 33.5 points. Howard, with a fifth from Mike Frazier (215), was 19th with eight points.

Iwaskiw lost to Wilde Lake’s Zathy Ndiang for the second straight weekend, 7-3.

Kraisser (37-0), cruised to the championship with two pins and a second-period, 15-0  technical fall of two-time Bayside Conference Tournament champ Seth Goggin (37-3) of Stephen Decatur. Kraisser, a junior, needs four more wins to capture his third state title.

“I want to come out and wrestle like I did this weekend and the weekend before,” he said. “I’m going to try not to worry about the big names too much and just take everybody seriously.”

Mark Colabucci (171) of Reservoir avenged last week’s loss to Wilde Lake’s Alvin Harris in the county final, controlling the match throughout on the way to a 6-0 decision.

The tournament likely marked the end of a stellar career for Mt. Hebron’s Drew Vickers, who finished fifth at 125 pounds and brought his career record to 123-41. Vickers eclipsed Mike Mengel’s school record of 121 victories.

“It’s the toughest region in the state,” said Centennial head coach Dave Roogow. “A lot of kids who would probably place in the states – like Vickers – sometimes don’t get in.”

Macon Stanley of Centennial also just missed the state tournament, finishing fifth at 135 pounds.
