Marshall Legacy Institute's K9-9K Walkathon & Community Festival

The Marshall Legacy Institute, along with Glenelg Country School, is hosting the second annual K9-9K Walkathon and Community Festival on June 16, 2012 on the campus of Glenelg Country School.

The K9-9K raises money towards sponsoring life-saving Mine Detection Dogs and help landmine survivors. Everyone is encourages to invite their friends and family and, of course, bring your favorite canine companion!

The day will feature a 9K walk through Glenelg Country School’s 87-acre campus and include fare from local restaurants, games, raffles, dog agility courses, canine massage therapy, and much more. Additionally, MLI’s “canine ambassador” Mine Detection Dog (MDD) Utsi, who served in Eritrea for 6 years, will demonstrate her keen sense of smell and show how dogs are able to “sniff out” landmines and save lives.

All funds raised from this event will go towards sponsoring a life-saving dog that will “sniff out” landmines in Angola, Africa. Angola is one of the most heavily mine-contaminated countries in the world, affecting more than 2.4 million people and the United Nations (UN) estimates that there are more than 70,000 landmine survivors in Angola.

To date, MLI has provided 172 MDDs to 11 countries and Glenelg Country School has sponsored 2 of them, MDD Dragon and MDD Country. Both dogs are currently locating mines in Afghanistan. In 2011, MLI-donated dog teams searched and cleared over 8.9 million square meters of land in some of the most heavily mine-infested countries of the world, thereby making the ground safe for people to work, children to play and communities to grow.
