Hurricanes and Patriots pursue state crowns while winter sports head into conference schedules.

The Elkridge Hurricanes, who provide with a pipeline of football talent, will have their 11-13 Federal team play the Damascus Cougars at Havre De Grace High School on Sunday for the MD Youth Football State Championship.  The ‘canes, led by coach Joel Vittori, are undefeated on the season and are seeking their second consecutive state title. Elkridge’s 11-13 National team, which won the Mid-Maryland title this fall, is in the state semi-finals against Columbia at 11 am at Good Counsel on Sunday.

The Ellicott City Patriots 11-13 National team is still in the state title hunt after a convincing first round win over Emmorton. They advanced to the semi-finals this Sunday and face Overlea at 12:30 at Good Counsel.

Salisbury’s final score of the 2011 season campaign came from Howard grad Tyler Curley in a 34-14 season-ending loss to UW-Whitewater in Wisconsin. The UW-Whitewater Warhawks are defending DIII national champions and have won 43 straight games, the longest winning streak in all of college football.

Fellow Lion Calvin Ford had six tackles in the game, and Howard’s Drew Allebach added a solo tackle to his season totals. On the season Calvin Ford had 53 stops, Allebach added 16, and Curtis Ford another 21 tackles. On the offensive side of the ball, Curley found the end zone eight times in a stellar year for the 11-2 Sea Gulls and the quartet from Howard High. 

Chapelgate boys’ basketball is well into their MIAA-B schedule. As , the Yellowjackets have moved up in class from last year and face a tough regular season schedule. That was evident when they played John Carroll (6-0), the Baltimore Sun’s top-rated team in 2010-2011 and currently ranked sixth in the area, in early season action. Their record currently stands at 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the league, with wins over Severn and Friends. Their JV team boasts a 5-1 mark. Sophomore forward Isaiah Harris-Winn leads all scorers with an 11.1 ppg average.

Chapelgate girls’ basketball has opened at 1-1 and competes in the IAAM C conference.

The Vikings opened their winter indoor track season Dec. 3 at the Prince George’s County Sports Complex in the Howard County Kickoff Challenge. The Vikings boys’ team won the overall meet, with Centennial placing 8th and Howard tied for 9th overall. Junior Jackson Porter took the 55 meter dash, with fellow Viking Paul Haley finishing 4th.

The Vikings girls’ team finished second overall at the meet, with sophomore Julie Knorr finishing 4th in the 55 meter dash, just ahead of fellow sophomore River Williams. Senior Michaela Wilkins captured the 300 meter dash.

’s Nathan Kraisser currently is one of the top-rated wrestlers in the country and is planning on competing at 132 lbs. this winter. Kraisser will be vying for his fourth straight state title on the mat and has committed to UNC in the fall of 2012. Along with Oakland Mills’ Tony Farace (120 lbs.), Kraisser is vying to become Howard County’s first four-time state champion.
