Ellicott City Sports Report, December 21, 2011

Centennial, Chapelgate hoops, Hebron indoor track out to fast starts.

The Chapelgate Christian (6-4, 3-2) boys' basketball team fell to a solid Annapolis Area Christian School (4-5, 4-2) team, 54-41, on Friday. This week they began a stretch that features eight of their next nine games at home with a matchup against Coppin Academy. Senior guard Jordan Lawrence leads the team with 54 assists on the season. The Yellowjackets’ JV team is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.

According to maxpreps.com, the boys' basketball team is 3-1 out of the gate and 2-1 in the county. has started off at 4-0 with four straight wins over Howard County opponents, including a 62-49 victory on Friday over Long Reach (3-2, 2-2). The win featured 21 points from Keonte Potts.  The Eagles sit atop the county standings, and 10th in the Baltimore Sun’s area rankings, while Mt. Hebron is in a three-way tie for second place. Howard is 1-3 overall and in the county to date. 

Mt. Hebron girls’ basketball is 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the county. Centennial is at 2-2 in the county and overall and the Howard Lions girls’ team is 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the county.

Chapelgate girls’ basketball is 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the IAAM-C’s ‘Y’ Division.

Two area youth football teams ended their state championship bids earlier this month. The Elkridge Hurricanes’ 11-13 Federal team bowed to Damascus, 22-19, in a hard-fought state final. The Ellicott City Patriots’ 11-13 National team lost to Overlea in the state semi-finals. Congratulations to both teams on their outstanding 2011 campaigns.

Mt. Hebron graduate and current NFL’er Aaron Maybin has six sacks and four forced fumbles for the 8-6 New York Jets. Maybin has been utilized primarily as a pass-rushing linebacker to date by the team. New York is in the hunt for an AFC wildcard playoff spot and faces the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium this Saturday.

grad Jon Rohrbaugh won the Outstanding Walk-On Award for Penn State this fall as the team’s long snapper. Rohrbaugh didn't long snap at Howard and learned the skill in college, earnestly working his way to the starting job as an upperclassman.

Mt. Hebron indoor track coach Teyarnte Carter provided Patch with a list of names to keep an eye on in the 2011-2012 winter season. On the boys’ squad they include Paul Haley, Jackson Porter, Nate Gainey, June Kim, Jeffery Chavis, Sydney Cohen, Eric Dombrowski, James Johnson, Spencer Owens, CJ Miller, and Karl Schmidt. For the girls, Carter named Michaela Wilkins, River Williams, Taylor Williams, Julie Knorr, Karli Buescher, Hannah Vaughan, Chelsea Vane, Rachel Yep, Areeba Mushtag, Jader Godsey, and Kimara Walker.

The Vikings’ boys team won their second straight Howard County meet earlier this month in PG County, with the girls finishing third out of 12 county teams. Coach Carter focuses primarily on the 55 through 500 meter distances for the Vikings’ indoor squad.
