Atholton Defeats Annapolis, Meets River Hill in Second Round of Softball Playoffs

Howard, Mt. Hebron and Reservoir also advanced to the second round.

By beating Annapolis 12-0 on Thursday, Atholton’s softball team advances to face county foe River Hill in the second round of the MPSSAA Class 3A softball tournament.

River Hill, the East region’s third seed, earned a bye in the first round and didn’t have to play. The two teams will play Monday at 4 p.m. at River Hill. The teams have played twice already this season, with Atholton defeating River Hill both times.

Other 3A winners were Howard, Mt. Hebron and Reservoir. Howard defeated Wilde Lake 23-5 and will face top seed Northeast in the second round. Mt. Hebron upended Centennial 11-0 and Reservoir shutout Hammond 7-0.

Howard County teams didn’t fare as well in the Class 2A tournament, however. Oakland Mills fell 10-0 to Lackey and fifth-seed Long Reach was upset by 12th-seed Calvert 7-3. Marriotts Ridge lost a close game to Patuxent 3-2. 

Glenelg still remains in the tournament, having received a bye as the South region’s top overall seed. Glenelg will face Lackey in the second round on Monday.

The MPSSAA baseball tournament begins Friday, with Howard and Centennial getting started at 4:15 p.m. River Hill will battle Northeast on the road at 6:30 p.m.

The Atholton baseball team, which has a No. 2 seed in the East region, claimed the Howard County baseball championship Thursday night with a win over Wilde Lake 6-3. The Raiders’ first round opponent will be the winner of the River Hill-Northeast game.
