PSATs: What Kids Need to Know

PSATs are tomorrow; here's what kids need and want to know.

Howard County high school students will get their first taste of standardized test-taking tomorrow.

On Wednesday, all 10th and 11th grade students will be taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).

The College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation co-sponsor the test, which gives high school students the chance to practice standardized test taking before the SAT. It will also give high school juniors a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The test measures critical reading, math problem-solving and writing skills. Participating in the test program also gives students access to college and career planning tools.

Students should receive the PSAT Student Bulletin, which has useful information including what types of questions to expect, tips and hints scholarship information and a practice test with answers. Scores will be available in January of next year.
