Patch Visits St. Louis School's Newsroom

Patch visited a school newsroom to talk shop with the staff - and do some writing.

Good news! Kids are still interested in newspapers. Patch visited St. Louis School in Clarksville to talk about reporting and writing with the staff of the school's paper, The Knightly News. While there, the staff interviewed one of their staff members and, with a little help from their guest editor (me), put together this profile:

Olivia Docal has a bright future ahead of her – though she’s not exactly sure what it will look like. One thing is certain; her family will play a big role in whatever she does.

Food is important to Olivia. Luckily, her family comes from a tradition of cooking.

For Christmas, Olivia’s family – with Cuban, Spanish and Irish roots – made a traditional Cuban meal of pork with black beans and rice.

“I like all food,” she said with a smile.

Olivia’s family also has influenced her academic aspirations. She wants to attend Our Lady of Good Council for high school. One of her sisters is currently a student there, another sister has graduated from Our Lady and her dad was a high school student there, “Back in the day,” she said, laughing.

Olivia also has a little brother – she said she gets along with all of her siblings, especially the little one.

An eighth grade student at St. Louis School, where she is the editor of the Knightly News newspaper, Olivia is a “great writer,” said Zulma Whiteford, who runs the newspaper program.

Olivia started with the newspaper last year when it began because she likes to write. She also likes sports – she has played lacrosse since she was little – and music, her favorite band is One Direction. She doesn’t know if she wants to write for a newspaper when she gets older.

When she gets to high school, Olivia said, rather than do the same thing she’s been doing at St. Louis School, “I’ll probably open a new chapter in my life.”
