Outdoor Athletics Canceled at County Schools Due to Heat

Teams may still practice indoors. Games are canceled, but can be rescheduled.

All outdoor athletic events, including games, have been canceled by the Howard County School System on Wednesday due to a Code Red heat index.

Teams may still practice indoors. It will be up to schools to reschedule games, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

The National Weather Service reports the temperature at 2:20 p.m. at 93 degrees, with a heat index of 97 degrees at BWI Airport.

The following email was sent out by the school system advising parents of the cancelation of evening activities:

"Due to the fact we will experience a Code Red heat index this afternoon, all outside athletic events are cancelled for today. Practices may be held indoors. If you have questions about your child's athletic practice or event, please contact your child's school. "
