Maryland Transgender Student Crowned Prom Queen
The transgender student was honored at the same school where a girl was cyberbullied over her prom outfit the week before.
A woman named Destiny decided she was going to become prom queen at Baltimore City's Digital Harbor High School, a dream she fulfilled this month.
Destiny Hartis, 20, who was born with the name Brandon Hartis, started hormone therapy in tenth grade, founded a diversity club at Digital Harbor and was on the cheerleading squad before she dropped out briefly due to challenges with her studies, according to The Baltimore Sun, which reported she was not bulled.
The paper reported she was determined to win prom queen, and she did May 15.
Students around the country have also crowned nontraditional prom queens. This week in Danbury, CT, a homosexual student was awarded both prom king and queen, ultimately choosing to be the queen, Danbury Patch reported.
Not all students at Digital Harbor, however, were met at prom with acceptance. At the junior prom—which had a "Hollywood" theme, held a week before the senior prom where Hartis won her crown—one girl was given so much flack on Twitter for her Rihanna-inspired outfit that the response was written about by Gawker and the Huffington Post.
