Students at the Academy of Finance in Ellicott City will soon be able to experience what it feels like to be on the trading floor.

The Howard County Public School System announced Thursday that the academy will be receiving the school system's first stock ticker, which will complement the curriculum at the Academy of Finance.

Located at the Applications and Research Lab in Ellicott City, the finance program is part of the school system's career academies initiative, in which students may declare before junior year that they want to focus on a specific career path. The Academy of Finance offers hands-on experience like an internship to develop a local business network.

Unveiling of the stock ticker will take place at the Applications and Research Lab, 10290 Clarksville Pike, in Ellicott City at 11:30 a.m. on March 21, with Superintendent Renee Foose, Board of Education members, community business leaders and others in attendance.

At the unveiling, the Academy of Finance will announce upcoming initiatives, according to a statement from the Howard County Public School System, including financial literacy workshops for middle school students and teachers, made possible with support from local organizations.

I always believed colleges, not community colleges, don't generally prepare students for jobs. They are getting so much in tuition and you get a bunch of unemployed and unprepared student. Awful way to compete in this world. Perhaps high schools can do better than them

I think Finance Labs have been a great addition to Universities across North America and it is great to see K-12 districts starting to implement them. If anyone is interested you can check out a directory of all of the finance labs in the US at http://universityfinancelab.com/
