Gifted and Talented Teachers from Across Howard County Honored
Nominations came from current and former students and their families.
The Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee honored 29 educators at the G/T Educator Recognition Celebration at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in a night full of gratitude, celebration and surprises.
This was the second year the Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee (GTAC) has put on this event. Parents and students nominate educators, and the GTAC Educator Recognition Subcommittee works to recognize the efforts of those who go above and beyond to enhance gifted and talented education in the Howard County Public Schools System (HCPSS). Committee chairs are Dayle Spotte-Smith and Catina M. Evans.
The event began with a welcome and opening remarks from committee member Laura Shovan and Spotte-Smith, followed by greetings from HCPSS Deputy Superintendent Mamie Perkins.

Honorees and attendees were then treated to a performance of two songs from the Long Reach Chamber Choir, as directed by June Pompei.
Educators were recognized for their excellence, and each heard a quote from the person who had nominated them. They received certificates and flowers and posed for official photographers Liz Dunster and Debbie Blum.

Although closing remarks by Penny Zimring, instructional facilitator for the G/T Education Program, had been scheduled, Zimring was instead presented with a surprise award of her own.
